Default 17inch Winter Tire Package

I just spoke with Tire Rack and they told me that the 17inch tire (Pirelli Winter 210, 205/50/17 225/40/17) is the recommened combo for the winter use of the car. I live in VA so we get some snow, some ice, but it is cold all winter. Does this jive - I've seen lots of posts advancing the Dunlop Wintersports.

Thanks!

Ed

I ordered my 17" Rims and dunlop Winter M2s from Tire Rack and they are fantastic winter tires. I don't have any experience with the Pirelli's but most people use the dunlops for a reason and I would recommend them.

OK, that was the consensus I had seen. Just ordered a set, will give them a try - no snows is not the way to go as I've found out! Thanks, Ed

Sounds like it's too late to chime in, but check Ebay first ... I bought a set of factory 17" twist rims and factory mounted Dunlop snows from a Porsche dealer for $1200, brand new, still in the crate from Germany. There are deals out there ...

I just got a set of second hand Porsche OEM original equipment 17" rims with brand new Blizzaks from Wheel Enhancements. The price was almost exactly the same as quoted by Tire Rack for a brand new aftermarket look alike. The rims look almost brand new. Having used both Dunlop M2's, Pirelli's and Blizzaks for winter tires, I have found no real discernible difference. Given a choice though I would go with the Blizzaks, they just seem to be quieter and hold the road better.

2 are here - still waiting on the others. Seems strange to get 2 wheels from a FEDEX truck!

What would be the best way to store tires / wheels for 6 months out of a year? Inflated, deflated? On edge, flat? Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Ed

Ed,
I have the Dunlop M2s on 18" rims and they work great. I'm sure you'll love them. I would think that you should keep the tires inflated and store them on their side _ not |. Other than that hit them with some rubber conditioner and they should be fine for the 6 mos. Enjoy

Funny, Tire Rack told me that Blizzaks were the preferred package with turbostyle 17's. Seems they "fly" with the option that makes them the most money---or it really doesn't make a difference. Let the buyer beware!! I did take their advice and am satisfied with the Blizzak's.
