Default '01 guards red clearcoat?

I have been waxing the 996 I just got and I can not see that it is clear coated. Car is guards red, but it does not look clear coated. It has a couple areas where there are light scratches just bearly visible in incandesent light and I have used a fine grit compound to remove. This is not working and the paint seems pretty hard. So:

1) Is it a clear coat paint?

2) If so does it use a colored clear coat as I have seen on other brands?

3) Any suggestions how to polish out the light scratches?

I also have a stone chip I would like to fix. Anyone used the Langka system and have results to share? What suggestions does anyone have to repait these?

Thanks in advance.

Take some polish (not wax) and rub with a white cloth, not real hard, but as if you were polishing out a scratch. If the cloth turns red, you don't have any clear coat. My 95 guards red Carrera 4 did not have a clear coat, but I've been told that 97 and on does.

All current models have a clear coat. Does not matter if it is a metalic or solid color.

Langka will work great with guards red. I used it on my arctic silver and after alot of experimenting I got good results but the process was much easier on my mom's non-metallic red benz. You can also achieve similar results with polish and buffing, but langka makes the job easier. Make sure you use multiple thin coats of touch up and allow proper drying time. Also I hear that mothers bought the langka ingredients and sells the same product for half the price. good luck and if you wanna avoid the inevitable bumper rock chips you might wanna consider a clear bra.
also, i dont think the clear coat bottle is really necessary unless if you are really a perfectionist the base coat will be fine. and regarding the fine scratches i use 3m swirl remover or meguiars #9 and a porter cable random orbital buffer.

1) Yes

2) No, there is no such thing as colored clearcoat

3) Polish & wax as you would any other color

Viken,

Having been the recipient of your knowledge more than once, I would not question your comments on a Porsche, nor much of anything else for that matter. But my question about the clearcoat color does have some fuzzy background in that I thought I read some time ago that GM added some tint to the clearcoat for the Corvette yellow and the metallic red produced since about 2000. I may be wrong about this but it was in my mind when I asked. But I must say I stared at the paint for two days while waxing and again last night and I can not see the clearcoat on this car, although I am convinced it is there. I had a 2000 911 in artic silver and the clearcoat was pretty apparent.

On point 3, I have tried what worked in the past. I used clay and removed all the contaminents so now the car is smooth as glass. Then I tried several times to use a clearcoat compound to remove the scratches. This stuff worked well in the past but not on this car. I don't think the scratches are deep as a fingernail will not catch, but maybe the paint is harder.

Do you have product suggestion that would help out?

Thanks for the comments.

I understand. But, my 1996 non-metallic black Carrera 4S had clearcoat and my 2004 Carrara white GT3 as well. Porsche says all their paints have clearcoat and I just have to go by that and the fact that my two latest have had it. As to the GM thing, it doesn't sound right. Adding color pigment to clearcoat will make that unclear. Aside from not seeing much of a benefit from that, as opposed to just paint the car with a solid final coat, it wouldn't be called clear coat. I use Zymol on my weekend-only cars and Zaino on my daily driver. On all cars, I use the Griot's clay and fine polish.

Your right about it not being clearcoat! Maybe it is a top coat that is harder because I think all the clearcoat finishes are harder than the pigmented paint. In any case I may be wrong about the Vette paint. I am going to research this just as a matter of curiousity and I will let you know FYI. It is now an itch I must scratch!

I have some Griot's products, I guess I will check them out for something to remove scratches in clearcoat.

Thanks,

Bill

I found and article about the clearcoat and the tint for red and yellow on a c5 Corvette. I am not trying to belabor a point but to increase the general knowledge of paint processes. (And yes, to prove to myself I am not as nuts as I thought this morning!)

I hope this turns into a link.

Thanks for the input on the scratches. I will try some new product. You reallyhave to get in the right incandesent light to see them so most likey no one but me knows they are there. But that's enough.
