996 vs Boxster S?

996 vs Boxster S?
I sold my 2000 Boxster in August and have regretted getting rid of my Porsche ever since. I started looking around again a couple of weeks ago and narrowed my choice down to 01-02 Boxster S. I have found a decent deal on a 2002 Boxster S with 2500 miles, but today I ran across a 996 that I am also interested in. It is a 2000 996 C2 with 28k miles. The seller agreed to $41,000, and I'm currently having a PPI done on the car.
I'm in a quandary now, though. I really loved the handling and the drop-top on my Boxster, but I would like the upgrade in power, too. I'm concerned that the 996 will be falling out of warranty.
Assuming both cars are close in price, I would like to get some input on my internal debate.

Your warranty concerns are certainly valid on the 996... I would be more comfortable buying this car from a dealer that can show you the maintenance history. Other than that the car only has 28K miles so you should be able to put many, many more miles on the car with little problems.
Now, would I choose a 2000 996 over a 2002 Boxster S? In a heartbeat, such a different animal. I drove a boxster for 2 weeks last year and I though it was an amazing car for the money but compared to my C4... no contest.

Been there - done that....Had a 2000 Boxster S for 7 months and made the mistake of test driving a C4 Cab. Ended up selling the Boxster. Although the Boxster, with the mid engine, may actually handle a little better than the 996 (suspension changes coming!) overall the 996 is much nicer and the extra power is great. My vote is for the 996, but make sure which ever car you choose has the options on it that you want.

i had a boxter for a loaner for a while and could not even imagine considering a boxter ever, but i figured if i had not owned a 996 or driven one or even so much as brushed my paint leg up against one, the boxter may have been an alright car

We keep a 99Boxster for warm summer nights and a trip to the movies. If you're seriously driving, go for the 996. (I was able to keep the Boxster when my ttX50 arrived, I get to switch back and forth- the Boxster has way more chassis than engine). More power makes a car feel lighter. AS

That's a tough one. If you decide on a 996 I would only purchase a certified 996 from a dealer. Sure you pay more but the mere fact that you're covered for next two years from the "in-service"date is worth every penny. If I had the choice I wouldn't take a chance with a RMS car out of warranty. I know that Porsche has been good about repairing cars with RMS issues out of warranty but my concern is how long will they be willing to do it? Best of luck, let us know what you decide.

Before My 03 Targa I had a Boxster S - the difference between the two are worlds apart - the handling on the Targa VS the 986S is very close, the power and exhaust note of the 996 is wonderful and the interior is much more grown up. I love the rear end of the 996 (reminds me of J LO's - Nice Big ***!) the lines of the 986S are truly beautiful, but the 996 is a classic design that never falls short of PERFECTION. Just my two cents - keep the change :-0
