Default Track car input requested

Hi everybody,
I'm moving to the Uk in a few weeks. I ordered a 997 (Sept delivery) but do not want to put that car on the track as I've really had bad experiences on the paint job of my previous 996 with heavy track use and therefore I decided to buy a street legal (don't want to mess with trailers) track car to "play". At first, I pretty much had decided to get a 3 year old Elise but when I'm looking at prices, I'm realizing that the cars cost the same as a 91 or 92 964 which has much more power and can be made to be a great car with little mods. It's also a pretty bullet proof engine and transmission -or at least it's a known quantity. What do you guys think? Any other car that I should consider? Another thing I should say is that I like the idea of a Porsche track car because the people in the club are quite nice and interesting (VS very competitive and driving scarry stuff).

the elise has a power-to-weight ratio of <10 lbs per hp. that's better than a base 996.

You are not going to get a dissenting opinion from me regarding the Elise. I am seriously going to check them out when they hit the US shores.

You are moving to UK. You may want to check out Caterhams, another phenomenal track car. Here's a link: Caterham, UK . Check out the Superlight R500.

Well I think the EVO 8 is a nice car-everyday driver(but that ricer look isn't for everyone)-easy to mod great in all weather conditions and cheaper then the elise. But have to say love the Elise too for what it really shines is on the track. Regards. Mike

In addition to my ttX50, I have a few track cars. The Elise 190R is tough to beat. Mine has been reliable and therefore relatively inexpensive to run. I trailer mine to the track, but I'd guess in England you could probably drive it. AS

Light cars are so much more fun (and easier on tires & brakes) on the track - go for the Elise, unless you can find a lightweight Porsche that's been track-prepped. 964's are quite heavy (as heavy as 996) unless it's an RS (you may be able to find a ROW 964RS in England...)

You dont say what your budget is , but if you want to track an older Porsche the pick of the bunch is the 964RS, also the most expensive to buy. The front engine cars also go well, eg 968CS and 944 , good balance. The Elise is an excellent non-Porsche choice. Best way to shortlist is to go to a few trackdays when you get over here, usually free entry for spectators, and talk to some drivers. Websites to lurk at are www.easytrack.co.uk , www.bookatrack.com, www.pistonheads.com/gassing
Good hunting !
