Default 996TT engine numbers

I was at the Detroit Auto show on Saturday. Porsche have a few engines on display, including a 996 Turbo engine. When inspecting it, I noticed that the case has a 964 number on it in a few places. Is this normal? I thought the 964 series was produced between 1989 and 1994. I guess it doesn't matter, but I was just interested in it.

Yes, the 964 part number mostly pertains to the crankcase. This is, however, the case with the Turbo, GT2 and GT3 engines. Not the Boxster and 996 models.

Just to confuse things more at least some GT3s are now being delivered with a new case (still based on the old 911 case) which has a 996 part number: New GT3 engine case thread
