Default Casually looking for 996 C2 for track use

My first post in 996 forum, but as the title says, I am starting to look and see what might be available that meets my desire. I do not want a car with PSM which I think limits my options to 99 MY since I think 2000 C2 got PSM and E-gas which I also do not know how behave on the track. The ideal car has track suspension, seats/harness, and role bar, with suspension being most important, since I can add the other stuff.
The car must have working A/C, and intact emission components because I intent to register it for occasional drive to the track when not trailering.

I bought a car basically identical to your description. It's a 99 with the sport package (M030, limited slip, and traction control). The 99s we're produced for over a year since production began in earnest around February and March of 1998. There are typically a fair number of 99s available and you should be able to find one without too much searching.

You should do some mods prior to tracking the car, at least for piece of mind. I will be installing the 2 qt deep sump and 3rd (center) radiator on mine next weekend.

None of the factory seats that came in them are great for tracking. Euro GT3 seats bolt right in, but they are not cheap. You will also have to install a roll cage and harness. Mine had one when Michelin Research and Development owned it. Unfortunately, they removed the cage when they sold it. I will probably install another one one of these days since I plan on tracking it fairly frequently.

PSM was an option in MY2000 I believe as I have a 2000 and no PSM. I don’t know when it became standard

I can't speak broadly, but my 2000 does NOT have PSM, so I tend to think it was an option.

PSM is not a problem on track. There's a button to turn it off. I have it in my 2001. At a new track or when it's raining, I'll leave it on for a few laps to feel where it is stepping in, and then I'll turn it off. If you're driving smoothly it barely does anything, usually only limiting power a tiny bit at the exit of slow corners, especially if there's any kind of camber change or crest that makes the car get light and tend to spin the rears. If you turn it off, it's a non-issue and you're free to slide as much as you desire. But if you're doing a lot of things that PSM would stop you from doing, you're sliding the car too much and going slow.

The only downside to it is while it's turned off you have to look at a warning light on the dash, but you learn to tune that one out.

A friend who is a Porsche tech, owns a low 40K mile, guards red, '02 996 coupe WITHOUT PSM and set up for street and track.

Lightly optioned when new: 288 Headlight washers, 601 Litronic headlights, 680 Bose premium sound, 692 6 CD changer & X76 Flared rocker panels.

Aftermarket equipment: Recaro seats, Roll bar, 5 point harnesses on both seats, Bilstein PSS9 suspension, H & R adjustable sway bars, Stainless steel sport mufflers & tips, K & N intake, Lowered, aligned & corner-balanced. Has GT3 emblems, wheels, front bumper cover and rear wing.

Since he is a Porsche tech, he's done everything - IMS bearing retrofit, clutch, tuning, etc. while he had the engine out. When this guy buys a car, he is all over it replacing every part which is worn or might fail. He can buy the parts at cost and the labor is just his (scarce) free time.

Now with numerous vehicles, a new baby, wife, house, etc. it's time for the car to find a new home.

Thanks for all the information and a few PMs. Nice to learn that there are cars out there that offer a good starting base for what we want.
I have seen some posts about US M030 and ROW M030. what are the differences? Is there a source for learning what different options were on 996?
I also know many use GT3 control arms on 996 and SPB race cars for maximizing camber. What is the maximum camber that can be achieved without them?

US MO3O doesn't change the ride height but the ROW MO3O does.

I've had the wheels painted black subsequent to this photo.
My 03 C2 has PSM and a switch to deactivate it.

It is my DD. I bought it as a CPO in '06. It has 66K miles so far. I've done the IMS thing (twice thanks to dooshbag local indy) and some suspension bits. Upgrades include Recaros and a Gemballa exhaust

I've tracked it, but not since the GT3 joined the fleet

It was not chosen as an investment which is good as the value might be 50% of what I paid in 2006.

I love it and will keep driving it as long as it is willing & able.

Why not install the "Solution" and be done with it?

I have a stripped and caged '99 996 6MT that I'm about to start building into a race car. I'd be happy to custom build it for you if you'd like. Some ball parks on finished costs would be around $25K for DE, 30k for SP996, and $35k for GTB1 Spec.
