Interesting story - the very same thing happened to me in 1993.
I had an '90 Eclips GSX AWD turbo in for routine service. I got the phone call to pick up the car, then another call 3 minutes later to tell me that the car had been totalled and the driver (a 20-something mechanic) was being life-flighted off the scene.
Needless to say, the car war a ball of tin foil. Police estimated a speed of 100+ MPH from the length of the skid marks.
The dealer did get me Blue Book for the car, and a new '93 model at invoice, which was about the best I coudl hope for.
The drive had broken both his legs but fully recovered. The lesson I learned was to specify no test drives unless I am along for the ride.
