Where to find matching carpet material?
I picked up a 996 with a DAS rollbar installed, to install it, they have removed the padding and carpet that covers the metal panels with the DME and fuses bolted to the underside. So it leaves an expanse of exposed shiny aluminum in the back seat. I figure there must be some carpet that comes close to matching the stock (black interior) carpets that I can get a piece and velcro it on there or something. Anyone found something that works or is at least close to the original carpets?

The piece of carpet you are describing has a hard foam backing. I am missing the same piece of carpeting on my 99 coupe due to a roll cage being installed in the past. They come up for sale occasionally, I just haven't been agressive about buying one.
I should note that the convertible, coupe, turbo, and I think the targa all had different shaped pieces.

I have the original part, and it will be reinstalled if I ever remove the roll bar, or it will go with the car if I sell it. The issue (I think) is that the original padded part won’t fit between the roll bar and the aluminum plates. I should verify that before I buy anything new. My assumption is that I need something thinner to fit under the crossbar, hence the search for plain carpet.

Typically, a rectangular section was cut off the back corners to clear the roll cage base plate. Some were also cut for installation of additional speakers. Most of the coupe carpet pieces for the ledge I have seen for sale are missing rectangles. You should be able to find one that has already been cut for a decent price.

Yup, part #26.
Here is what the area looks like without it:
Here is what the original carpet looks like:
Seems like it is too thick to fit under there.

Yes...The carpet is bonded to a foam rubber backing. I think if you can find a similar carpet without the foam you should be able to fashion something that will work. Unfortunately, it'll probably never look as good as the factory formed piece. The up side is that it'll look better than the bare aluminum, and will probably attenuate the noise somewhat...
