Default Any cruise control diagnosis tips (other than clutch switch)

The cruise on my 03 C4S is seemingly possessed.

About 3 months ago I replaced the clutch switch and it worked for a day.
About 2 months ago I cleaned multi function switch with switch cleaner and it worked for a day
Yesterday I removed tip of cruise stalk and cleaned button with switch cleaner and it worked for ....

... yup, you see where this is going..

Today will not work and light will not come on at all. Often light is on dash when I fire up car first thing in the morning.
I am down to new switch or new control unit, neither of which excite me.

Any experience ?

Thanks

David

Do you know if anyone has modified your clutch helper spring? If it has been removed the pedal can get just enough play to cause it to disengage.

Was a popular mod for awhile.

Intermittent stop light bulb connection?
Ignition switch starting to go?

All good suggestions. Thanks. The frustrating part is the inconsistency. Drove home last night after posting this. Worked fine.
This morning the light wont even come on but I guarantee I will start it up in a day or two and the cruise light will be on at start up.

Many thanks

David
