Default Ignition lock problem

Yesterday I was in stop and go traffic on the freeway and stalled it by not paying attention.

In my rush to start it, I turned the key to off, but may not have gone all the way. When I turned the key to the start position the key just kept turning. I turned the key back towards off, but may not have gone all the way. Once again, I was able to turn the key about 180 degrees or so. By then I was being honked at. I then turned it all the way to off and pulled the key, reinserted it and the car started fine. I have started the car now about 5 times with no problem.

Do I have an ignition swicth that is failing? Or is it something else?

The 996 won't restart after running unless the key is turned completely to the off position - turning it back to the accessory position is not sufficient. If you're not sure you turned the key all the way counterclockwise, that would be the issue.

The most common issues with a failing ignition switch are with the accessories not working and difficulty getting the key in or out. Not sure if what you're describing IS consistent with that condition, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to order the replacement part now...you're going to need it eventually.

I believe that I did not turn it all the way off. No start. However, I was able to turn the key as much as I wanted, way past the normal start position. That's my concern. Igmition switch going bad?

Or do you think that it's the ignition lock?

Start with the least expensive part, the electronic switch $14, when it comes to ignition problems. Easy DIY. Do a search you'll find many threads here explaining process of swap and symptoms.
