When I was replacing the air filter in my 996, I noticed that there was only a fine mesh on the "filter side" of the MAF, but no plastic grille. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a grille there in addition to the fine mesh, or if it's missing? I was unable to find any decent pictures showing the inside/MAF section of the filter box. Does anyone know? Thanks

 

Yes, there should be both a plastic screen and a fine mesh, the unfortunate news is the air box is only available as an entire unit to purchase.

Do you happen to know if there are any differences between a 3.4 and a 3.6 filter box? They look identical as far as I can tell.

 

Same airbox between the 3.4 and 3.6 there is only one change between them - how the snorkel part attaches to the box. Later boxes have 3 tabs earlier boxes have one. Also 3.6 boxes have some foam baffling.

No performance or operational difference

Yes correct, the tops are interchangeable.

I think you can buy just the top off US ebay.
