Im looking into upgrading the speakers but I have a quick question. Everyone is suggesting 2 piece components for the fronts but I was thinking about getting Coaxials and putting them in the front doors. I read that it is best to put the tweeter and mid very close to each other. In the 996 the tweeters would be on the dash and the mids in the doors which pretty far apart. Has anyone tried this or is this a bad idea? Thanks

Bob, I have not yet started my own stereo upgrade project but, I did use MB Quart components in an M3 w/mids in the floor panels and tweeters in the door. The sound was pretty good. The Quart tweeters are very "rich" as they have a titanium dome design. I will not put Quarts in the 996 as I was told that the "richness" will be enhanced do to reflection off the windshield. I don't think you need to worry about them being apart. That's what they were designed to do.

You also get into all kinds of off axis issues and etc.

The lower end MB Quart tweeters are overly harsh. To make them sound okay, one needs to attenuate them down to -4dbs to - 6 dbs on the crossovers unless bimaping and running lower wattage to the tweeters which is optimal. The only MB Quart tweeter I can tolerate is the MQ QM 25 tweeter, but they are pricey.

The best choice for this location would be the Focal Audioms as they are an excellent off axis tweeter and very smooth. I have a set and have been thinking about putting these in mine. Here is a link to those:

With reflection issues, you may want to consider a nice silky smooth silk tweeter. These tend to sound better of axis and won't have a harsh sound when reflected off the windshield.

Here is a lower budget silk dome tweeter, and they sound pretty nice for the price.

With speakers, the issue comes down to how much do you want to spend. Impossible to answer your question without a budget in mind due to the large variances in speakers. I will say from experience that there is dramatic differences between lower end $ 200 to $ 300 components SQ wise than the SQ produced by higher end components in the $ 500 and up range.

Their esotec tweeters are increidble. Dynaudios are made by Morrell and you can pick up the raw Morrell drivers without the Dynaudio name on them for alot less.

I think it depends on the overall "engineering" of your system. For example, Reus Systems - considered by many on this board to be the absolute best audio system places tweeters on the rear view mirror, to reflect the sound off of the windscreen.

On my Mercedes and Ford Super Duty, Reus installed tweeters facing upward in the door pockets, so the sound travels up and reflects off of the door frame.

I don't know that there is a hard and fast rule saying that the tweets need to be close to the mids. When it comes right down to it, after you reach a certain level of sound quality and volume, you won't be able to detect a difference, no matter how much of an audiophile you are!

Generally yes, its best to put them together but you don't necessarily need 3 piece sets of mids & tweeters (dash) and woofers (doors). 2-piece sets of woofer (for door) and tweeter (dash) work just as good and can cover the whole range of frequencies well, like the ones from Focal, they are brilliant.

Also, the mids and the tweeters ARE together in the 996, the mids are sized generally 4" maximum and fit perfectly in the stock location in the dash next to the tweeters. The ones that go in the doors are woofers (not mids) either 13cm sized (stock) or 16cm (you have to do a little custom work to fit them in the doors).
