Tilt Mirror

So when i search, all i can find are posts relating to how to program the auto tilt feature for the passenger mirror...

Does anyone know how to disable it completely?

Set your mirror adjustment control switch to the center or left. If it's to the right the swivel down mirror is activated when in reverse.

From my memory, you put the shifter in neutral and hold the seat memory buttons (M-1 or M-2) to disable the auto tilt.

To enable, put the shifter in reverse and hold the same buttons.

Neither the method suggested by jhbrennan nor the method suggested by ahsai worked on my car. Any other suggestions?

The function is.a bit finicky but what I said above is from the owners manual.

Thanks for the helpful link. Maybe there’s some difference between model years. I have a ‘99. The mirror still tilts even programming according to the linked manual. Oh well. Small inconvenience.

Ahsai 03-04-2018 02:54 PM

That's possible because the link I posted was for MkII 996s.

Little know fact, the tilting mirror indicates the health of the IMSB. If mirror tilts, bearing is A-OK.

Out of curiosity, why are you so keen on disabling it? I find it to be very useful.

I’d be less keen to disable it if it would return to normal in a forward gear. I haven’t developed a use for it. Or it might be I’m so geezery I can’t adapt. I could (should?) use the backup cameras in my other cars but I haven’t formed the habit. Now, however, having learned the relationship between the mirror tilt and IMSB lifespan, I am quite content with its operation.

It should return to normal when you put it in a forward gear. That's a different issue.

This might be slightly obscene but I don't use it so there isn't additional wear on the motor from having to move as much. As im typing this im realising how ridiculous it sounds...

Re-enabling it next drive haha

Actually I only realised it had been enabled after my dad drove my car and pressed M1 and reversed and the mirror tilted, I actually thought I hadn't configured it correctly. Out of everything on a 996 IMO configuring this setting isn't easy.

My car is a convertible, so not being able to see anything but the curb when backing into a parking spot sucks.

I cant get mine to program NOT to do it, and its a 50/50 shot if the thing actually returns back when taken out of reverse. If i get to irritated I am going to snip a few wires to put a end to the madness.

LeeVel 03-13-2018 01:44 PM

2000 - If you figure out which wires, let me know; my dikes are ready to snip too.
