Default Turbo look I wheels (18) question

Yesterday I saw an 02 or 03 Carrera with 18 turbo look I wheels with what appeared to be 285 size tires in back. Since the her car was moving I could not read the size of the tires but I know that the turbo look I wheels are an option on these model year carreras just like the carrera light wheels and the turbo look II wheels. My question is, are these turbo look I wheels that are optional on newer carreras the same size as on older 996's? My curiosity comes from the fact that I have an 01 996 with these 18 turbo look I wheels, whose rear tires are 265 in size. The newer carreras with the optional 18 carrera light wheels come with wider front wheels than the older 996's in order to offset the wider 285 size tires. So, was my vision and judgement on that carrera that I saw correct? Do optional turbo look I wheels come with wider front wheels now, and wider rear tires? It could also be that she already wore the back tires and replaced them with wider rear tires. Just very curious.

Assuming the car is at least a 2002 model and if those Turbo Look I wheels (option M413) were installed at the factory, their sizes would have been:

8" x 18" - ET52 - 225/40-18
10" x 18" - ET65 - 285/30-18

This is interesting, Viken ...my 99 996 has the hollow-spoke Technology rims and the rear tire is a 265. This is the size given as correct in the manual and the rims came from the factory with the car. But when I pulled the rims off to put on my winter rims, I noticed that the rear tires do not quite fit the rims, there is a small metal lip showing on the insides. Is this correct? The lightweight Carrera rims I bought recently have the 285s and that covers the entire rim.

Precisely! Your car is not a 2002 or later model.

Gotcha ... and there's no reason to be concerned that there is rim showing beyond the tire, yes?

But I assume the lightweight Carrera rim with the 285 will still work on my 99, correct?

Thanks, Viken, you are a great resource to Rennlist.

Thank you. No, there is no reason to be concerned regarding any or all the above.

So am I correct in stating that, since 2002, there is a wider front turbo look I wheel available (7" vs. 8") to allow wider 285 size rear tires?

As far as I know there is no issue with putting 285s on the std Turbo I's. In MY02, they just started putting wider tires on the same sized rims (better performance I assume). If you wanted to, you could put 265s on you Carreras...

BTW, Vic, if you are looking to unload those Carreras PM me...

No. The front wheel was increased from 7.5" to 8". And, it was done just for the hell of it.
