Default Problem with Tip

Hey guys this is my first post. I have a 2004 C4S and it has stopped going into first gear when I put it in drive or when i come to a stop at a stop light. Goes to 2nd and through gears from there. It shifts fine and if i put it in manual it goes in first and can shift through gears. Any ideas what could be the issue? Have the trans out now for the IMS upgrade so would like to get this figured out so I can get my car back on the road.

That, second gear starts, are normal if you are not constantly flooring it from a stop. I’m pretty sure that the car adapts to your driving style. Manual mode = all of the gears. Auto = 2nd gear starts unless the throttle is moved far enough to require a more aggressive launch.

Yes, is normal once the transmission is warmed up. You can always downshift to start in 1st though if you so choose.

My Cayenne has this same behavior. Starts in 2nd once warm, or if I put it in manual mode. Otherwise it always starts in 2nd.

That's normal.

You also drive the car like a grandma. Transmission is adaptive to your driving style. So if you disconnect the battery for 15 minutes and then start ripping on the car aggressively from the stop signs/lights and on the road, it will begin starting in 1st gear by default.

Yeah I don't drive it at hard as I probably could or should ( kind of like a grandma) but bought car with no maintenance records or service history. So didn't want to drive it to hard. So finishing up IMS, RMS, waterpump, belt, oil change, coolant flush. So after a little break in time on the new parts I won't be as worried about putting my foot in it a little more. thank you everyone for helping me out and look forward to reading a lot more to learn about this great car I have dreamed of owning for thirty years.

What you describe in your fist post is perfectly normal. That is how the trans. operates. ( I have a 2002 tip.)

Exactly. It works this way by design.
