Default Exclusivity, Defined: Damn engine cover attacked my hand

SLC had a mild set of weather come through this past week, so I got a three-day stretch to put a few hundred miles on the 996. I checked fluids to make sure things were in order before taking it up to speed and WHAM! Damn engine lid cover just about broke my hand. Luckily it was my entire hand resting on the edge and not just a stray finger, as the latter would have surely snapped from the force. After realizing how fortunate I was to have all bones intact & accounted for, I went for a drive & reveled in the sounds of new headers.

I recently replaced the shocks in the deck lid for fear of the same result and complained at the price of the damn things... guess it was worth it. Now for those headers...

I felt bad for the mechanic that did my PPI. He was a 20+ year European automotive mechanic and should have known better, but while he had his head under engine hood it dropped on his noggin! It was very hard not to laugh and it was the first thing I did after purchase. That engine hood is HEAVY! I have found those struts lose effectiveness when cold. My 93 300 ZX taught me that years ago.

Sounds like you need a new lid strut. $25 or so and 30 seconds to replace. Definitely not worth snapping your finger

Yep. I had to replace both struts on my Boxster's front trunk lid. One day the thing was fine. Next day it almost dropped on my head. Luckily as I raised the lid and then let go I felt it coming down and caught it before it hit me.

Not too long after I replaced the front struts something similar happened at the rear lid and I replaced the struts there too.

I think I'd rather take a smashed hand over the small dent that i put in my hood, when my hood struts gave out at Lowes awhile back

I've had the frunk drop on my head, not fun.

Also a good reason to get an aerokit wing, they are lighter haha

Pretty soon your lid won't open at all because the strut doesn't have enough strength to pop out of the latch when the switch is pushed. That's the nonviolent way I learned my strut was weakened. Order a full suite - two for the front and one for the back - and revel in your manliness after you install them in 5 minutes. Quickest beers you'll ever earn.

I've replaced mine on both the front and back of the car, however yesterday morning when the temps were -16F, they would hardly open and once open not stay up as I was loading something into the trunk.

I bought the cheapest ones from pelican , usually I don't go that route but three years later the 15 dollar ones are working like new.
i bought an extra one but it's still on the shelf .

I used the same brand , tuff support (http://www.tuffsupport.com/Pages/Pages/About-Us/1.aspx)
for the frount hood too . Also 15 bucks each Also still working fine 3 years later , spent about $45 for all three , two fronts and a rear lid prop

Cold makes it weak, it may be a pressure thing.
