Default RMS replacement without IMS replacement Question

Hi All!

I went thru the pinned thread and did not really find my answer.

I am considering buying a 03 4S as a Daily Driver (with snows in winter of course). The current owner replaced the RMS and clutch but NOT the IMS.The car has low miles in the 30's. I read in the thread that there may be an issue if you do the RMS but NOT the IMS. Is this true due to oil in the tube? And if I drive it like I stole it (or properly in PCar terms) could that clear oil. I have had 4 C4S's with no issues and my thought is by now in its life it should have gone if it were to go.

Any thoughts????

Well my 03 spit the bit on the IMS at around 38,000, so I won't be the one telling you to ignore it.

Put the Solution in it! It should have a lot of good miles in it. Enjoy them.

Ditto on the Solution. With such low mileage and intent to daily drive, I would not hesitate.

RMS and IMSB are not related items.

My '04 C4S has similar maintenance history. Records show that the RMS was changed several times to fix oil leaks along with the IMS Flange. But it has the original IMS bearing. It does seem crazy not to swap out the bearing but I believe this is common if the car is exclusively dealer serviced since Porsche (and hence their dealers) does not allow in situ IMS bearing replacement. The process for replacing the bearing (without splitting the case) was developed by independent specialists and Porsche apparently does still not recommend this. If you are a gambler as reckless as I am, you could take your chances with the original IMS until it needs a clutch, or another RMS before swapping it out. Mine has 94k miles and still going strong. Some of those miles have been on track too

Thanks Silver!

It is a wonderful car all around.

I can't wait to plow by the 4x4's in the snow in a PCar
