Default 996 How much fun can you have ???

As Winter approaches and the car cover is secured, Spring seems a long ways away

I don't know about other 996 owners here on RL, but some of you have to admit our cars are a bunch of fun.

The 996 is got to be one of the most versatile sports car under $30k.

Over the last four years, I have enjoyed:

European Car Concourse

Autocross

HPDE

Drag Racing

How do other 996 owners use their cars?

In the past year I drove mine 70 miles into ownership, until it started to knock. Those 70 miles were fun and I imagine it will be way more fun with a FSI engine in it.

The only problem with 996 is the expensive rebuild. All manufacturers engines go bad, some more than other. Even a Nissan or Toyota can go bad after heavy track use.
Difference is there is a pile of JDM engines you can pick up, or everyone knows how to rebuild them.

I think/hope rebuild costs and swap costs will go down, imagine if you could torture your 996 as much as you can do with a Miata!

I think it's a great platform for everything related to go fast but the expensive rebuild stops me for going all out. Still do track days but civilized...

I agree with you, but preventive maintenance done timely reduces the risk.

My thought is , if I purchased the car maintained it properly, than I am going to enjoy it.

When I am driving around Watkins Glen at a HPDE, I am sure not having any thoughts of IMS or scored cylinders. I know I have done everything possible to ensure all working components are as good as I can do.

I smiling.

The worrying is done during hours and days of preparing.

I mean, after all I have read here and other places, I don't think this is necessarily true. Plenty of 996 owners did everything and more to help reduce the risk, and their engines imploded anyway. Then, there's the people who don't do any of the PR, and their engine lasts forever.

I compare it to that uncle who smoked cigarettes until he's 97 and died of a broken hip, not cancer. Then there's aunt Judith, who never smoked but died of lung cancer at 56. Go figure, right?

Either way, kudos to you for enjoying the living s*** out of all these cars have to offer.

I have continued to try and straighten the road leading from my neighborhood to town. The road is still crooked. I still smile.

Your car is very nicely set up....Are those cargraphic wheels you have on them...The reason I ask is because I will be selling my set....love the look but the screws hit my Brembo big brake kit calipers. Do you have any problems with that on stock calipers....I want to make sure whoever I sell to doesn't have that issue.

I'll play:

in the last 18 months I have:

- enjoyed the roadtrip across the US of a lifetime (7k miles one way).

- my childhood dream of racing on a track (hpde at buttonwillow).

- raced on a dry lake
Pic above

-gotten my car towed twice in a week (coolant hose cracked and a small fender bender)

- and just hit 110k miles

I leave the house with plenty of time to properly warm up the motor, then take the long way to work. Makes the day so much better! There really is no substitute.

Not at all, the trip was without a single issue (aside from hailstorms, some aquaplaning, plenty of dirtroads and underwater salt flats). The tires however were done afterwards.

Tow was out in a little desert/natl park just around sundown without any signal or a single soul around, aside from my co-driver. Fun times.

If you aren't going to aggressively corner in the car, somewhere, there's no reason to own one. It sure as %^&* isn't an investment.
