Default Gravel road 1. Hose clamp 0.

It's unsettling at how fast your "high temp light" goes to "engine broken light".

Wild: That is $$funny$$!! Yep, that was the light.

Long story...but interesting non-the-less: My beautiful pearl black '99 cab... A 78,000 mile Craigslister car. I bought it from a fishing boat captain last year. 'Called her the "Black Pearl"... He said that she was cursed. Cap did his best to explain the curse as he fumbled through the mountain of service records. The original owner had commuted into Seattle for more than a decade. The freeway stop and go had taken a toll. Brakes. Yearly oil changes and detailing. No fewer that 3 clutches. He also had thousands spent in soft top mechanism repairs. The Captain had done his research and found an immaculate car. He was in love; named her "Pearl". The first drive was it to a local indy for: New clutch, IMS bearing replacement, AOS, plugs/coilpacks hoses, belts and all fluids flushed/filled. It was then that he pulled forward the latest receipt... from the bottom of the pile... the one for a rebuilt/replacement motor. Cap explains that with-in one week his wicked bitch had left him broke and stranded alongside the road. You see, Porsche engineers had decided that it would be a good idea to make a water pump out of plastic. As common sense would dictate, a 15+ year old piece of plastic isn't very durable... the impeller fins broke off, the car overheated and warped the head. The new/replacement motor had 250 miles on it. Still a few months left on it's one year warranty. Cap said that he was afraid to drive it... if it broke again, he might just leave it rather than fix it.

Beautiful/sexy metalic black convertible. New motor. A stack of service receipts exceeding half of the original purchase price of the car. Now that's a real deal! I happily paid him my hard earned cash and proceeded to break in the new motor while touring Oregon's wine country . An entire summer of twisting country roads, the citrus aroma of vineyards in bloom, red tail hawk in the fields, families swimming at the ferry. Life was good! As it would happen, all Summers end... and endings are usually sad. Mine ended when a county road grader kicked up some base rock chunks on a gravel road I frequented. I tried to straddle a slight gravel ledge, but found that it had some large rock in it also. The little bump wasn't too bad. The resultant damage seems "simply disproportionate to the crime" (quote from: Pirates, the curse of the Black Pearl). Maybe I do believe in curses...

Not to sound like a jerk and pile on if you've suffered a bad failure here, but you still haven't exactly described what the damage is.

1) broken $1 hose clamp; replace and move on?
2) broken hose clamp and some loss of coolant; pay tow bill, replace coolant and hose clamp and move on?
3) broken hose clamp, loss of all coolant and continued to drive for a while, destroyed entire engine??

I fear it's #3, so I'm sorry if it is, but help us understand how we can prevent a similar fate.

The area around the hose clamp still looks dry and dusty like it didn't actually leak a bunch of fluid out.

DK: Oh, yeah. It was #3. I'm pretty sure that it's a blown head gasket. Engine quit/ no re-start. Took it to a shop: oil/water intermix and coolant leaking out of exhaust pipes after cranking. No offense taken, I was just trying to find some humor in this by telling my (too weird to be true) true story...

I see that this can be avoided by installing a factory skid plate. I'm certainly going to order one for my other car.

You didn't see temperature climbing or low coolant warnings? I've had hoses pop off before, and temperature climb and coolant warning come on virtually immediately.

You are taking it better than I would.

Pro tip: arson is very hard to prove for an insurance company, but you didn't hear it from me.

Damn, sorry to hear that. A good reminder for all of us to check our gauges frequently and believe them if something seems off.
