Default Tensioner washer changed - engine locked up?

Thread has been updated. I had suspicions that my friends 2000 996 tip’s engine had come out of time which caused the engine to lock up after a transmission replacement and IMS job. It turns out it was how his transmission was installed, as seen in the next post. The engine had been locked up which I discovered after I was asked to button up his hoses, connectors and get it started.

So here’s an update: I pulled the engine & trans out and separated the two. Guess what, the engine turns fine and the timing is correct. There was a lot of preload from the torque converter against the flex plate which was enough that it actually made the trigger wheel contact the engine case. Ouch.

Heres a shot of one of the alignment tabs inside the TC seal on the front pump. They are both broken like that. I noticed this after thinking how he put the TC on the engine first. I did a depth check with the TC on the trans by dropping an 8mm rod through the bellhousing hole where the factory pin tool goes and saw that it wasn’t sitting back far enough, even though it appeared to have gone into position. Looks like I might be doing the old switch-a-roo with his old front pump.

^^Huh^^? What's the point of this thread? Is there a question in there somewhere? A cautionary tale perhaps? I'm not following...

What I take on this is the torque convertor was not properly seated all the way into the transmission when it was bolted up to the engine. Ouch!

Maybe not in this case but...I've seen stuff like this at work. "Flat Rate " speed madness - some(ex-employees) used an impact air tool on every bolt/nut w/o adjusting the torque. They tighten one at a time to max torque !
It does take a long time to gradually snug up all the fasteners progressively by hand but you can easily feel if something is binding.

I've been a victim of an independent doing up transmission bolts with an air gun, cost me time and money grrr.

Lesson learnt

I actually had tried to delete the thread, but I didn’t have that option. So I just updated it and put in my findings just in case someone later on might make a mistake like this guy. Hopefully he has his original Tiptronic rebuilt instead of repairing this one
