Default Symptoms of failed/failing motor mounts?

Past two weeks I have noticed a few differences in my car that are seeming to get more noticeable.

After first starting the car, then hitting the gas in reverse there is a very slight extra thud that follows petal press.

When hitting the gas in first gear noticeable thump sound when you tap gas petal and when you release it.

When turning key to shut motor off, I sometimes get an extra tap sound as it does its final sputter before dying. Happens every 3rd or so shut off.

Car has 60,000. Exhaust does not look lopsided or sagging to my untrained eye. Mounts never been done to my knowledge. No real vibrations to speak of. Does it sound reasonable to look at mounts first? Sound I do trans mount while I am at it?

Shawn, get under the car and do a visual. Just did mine last week and when I looked it was very clear they were sagging. He's a couple of pics, new vs the old. Ralph

If they are more than 2-4 years old they are failing.

Most obvious sign is the tailpipes hanging down from the bumper and not hanging evenly left vs right. They should be pretty tight against the bumper opening, maybe a 1/4" gap normally.

1/4"...! ok you might be on to something...lol 15years old. Planned on getting my brake pads swapped out this month. Guess I will just bump the appointment up to this week and have them take care of all of it. Worth doing the trans mount as well at same time? I have a TIP.

They fail often, as stated easiest way to spot is sagging tail pipes. We carry the REIN brand and Genuine Porsche units, as well as the solid RS style mounts. Our Rein and Genuine Porsche units include two new nuts. Customers who install new mounts note improved handling and shifting since they keep support the lump in the back.

What I noticed most is that under full throttle accelerations, the car would squat and almost torque to one side. With new semi solid mount, that sensation isn't there and it pulls completely straight and doesn't have that extra squatting.

The empty
passenger seat vibrates at traffic lights .

If your car is on its original mounts , and most 996s still are , they need changeing .

I went with wevos , stock mounts don't last that long , why replace a known weak spot with the same oem part?

I have the exact same symptoms. My new mounts arrive tomorrow, according to tracking.

Easy job to replace, but be careful when putting the airbox back in so you don't break the oil filler tube and then have to take out the alternator, which is a royal PITA, ask me how I know.

Got my motor mounts and TIP trans mount replaced, along with front and rear brake pads and brake fluid replaced. Man you really notice it at idle and shifting. Car idles so SMOOOTH! And shift clunking is gone, very noticeable on downshift between 3 to 2, and 2 to 1st. Did not realize how bad my mounts were.

FWIW, if you replace your mufflers and don't align them quite right on the mounting brackets, your exhaust tips may sit lower than they should. Ask me how I know (yeah, one of these days I'll get around to fixing it).

Replaced mine this morning, the difference is barely noticeable tbh. Going to replace the tranny mount as well to cease any vibration and thud.

02 C4S... over 100,000km

New one on the left, Old one on the right
