Default New to 911 shopping: Some issues on 996 Turbo Cab I'm looking at...

5 year Cayenne Turbo driver looking at an '04 Turbo Tiptronic as a weekender. Drives very strongly, starts right up, sounds good but has a very light mechanical noise from the engine at idle; timing chain??

Issues:
  • Body, top and full leather are good, but it needs virtually all the wood interior trim replaced, including the wood wheel. Factory wood trim set is insane expensive. What are my options? Are aftermarket interior trim kits any good?
  • Only one side of the spoiler lifts.

Questions:
  • Are all 996 Turbos AWD?
  • How can I tell if it has ceramic brakes?
  • Does the 996 Turbo engine have the same IMS risk as the NA 996?
  • Does the '04 Bose audio system use the MOST fiber optic bus? Any harder to upgrade than others?
  • Any chronic issues?

Price is around $50K with 65K miles; seems high.

Comments?

Thanks.

while waiting for some of our resident experts to chime in, might also be a good idea to try the TURBO forum: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turbo-forum-61/

All 996 turbos (except the GT2) are AWD. You can generally tell if a car has ceramic brakes if it has yellow calipers and rotors that have seperate rotor hats as opposed to one piece like steel rotors. It was a pretty rare option in 996 cars. The 996 turbo is equipped with the Mezger engine, and it doesn't have the IMSB issue that is found in the normally aspirated 996. The 2004 models are equipped with the MOST fiber optic ring, so upgrades aren't quite as easy as earlier cars. You've already seen one of the common issues on the car, which is failure of the hydrolic rams for the rear spoiler. Some people address this with an aftermarket electric ram kit.

Listen to a couple of them. They are pretty noisy.
Read through this thread for some more insight.

MOST is a pain to modify. Some add a Dennison unit. some go with an FM module etc... I like the stock NAV, especially the arrows that show up in the tach display when you click the stalk to "NAV". It is a little clunky but works well.
New map, 2015, CD sets are available ~$275.

price seems high unless it has loads of options & receipts.
