Default Will Boxster (986) manual tranny fit my 996 of same year?

My 1999 996 maual tranny has a bearing that is making some noise. My (very trusted and super well known) independent mechanic says rebuild is too costly--that I should start to look for a low-ish milage donor tranny. I remember seeing somewhere that 986 Boxter had the same tranny, and would fit/work for 996. I find it hard to believe but I figured it would be worth asking. Thanks for any assistance!

I have a buddy who put a 996 3.4 in a boxster with boxster trnasmission, but has the original 996 6 speed for sale. More nts are quite different between the Boxster and 996.

You would have 1 forward gear and 6 reverse.
