My backup lights stopped working.
#2
When I bought my '99 996, my reverse lights did not work. The switch is located on the passanger side, towards the front of the car. I tried using a metric wrench and I could not find one that fit?! Ended up using an adjustable one to get the switch off. It turns out it is a GM PART! With a GM # on it. I tested the lights by shorting out the connector and turning the ign on. Lights worked. I then used an ohm-meter to see if the switch worked. It did.
The problem was that the switch was not being depressed enough while engaging reverse. I ended up filing down part of the hexagonal bolt part of it to allow the push pin to go deeper into the trans. That solved tha problem...
Perhaphs it is a common problem? Who else is missing reverse lights? Lou

My backup lights stopped working ~3 months after I got my 99 996 C4. The car was thoroughly checked by Porsche (I got the Porsche extended warranty) before I bought it. So I know the lights worked fine then. But a few months later a friend pointed out to me that the backup lights weren't coming on when I threw the car in reverse. I brought it to the dealer and they fixed it in no time at all. Sorry, but I didn't inquire as to what malfunctioned. I was just glad to have those lights working again.

My backup lights stopped working. Has anybody had this problem before? Where is the backup light switch? Is it on the tranny?

I know of at least two cases where the tech forgot to reconnect the wires to switch after an RMS change.

Lost the reverse lights and the tilt-down function of the passenger side mirror when tranny was placed in reverse. Dealer repaired it and told me that it was a sensor in the gearbox that had to be replaced. FYI.

Follow up to last post:
I pulled out the invoice form the dealer and found the part number that had to be replaced:
Reverse Light Switch #996-606-103-01 Part $18.99 Labor $48.95 (Out of warranty unfortunately)
Hope this helps.

Okay it's fixed...
Turns out it was the switch not being depressed enough, as noted in ninerguru's post. So what I did, was put a couple of tack welds on the head of the switch. Works like new.
Nerguru, do you have any type of quick shift on your car? I noticed this after I put my B&M in.
