This thread is discussing the interpretation of auction results relative to certain market benchmarks, and my observation is that sometimes the explanation for big gaps in auction results lies in where the cars live on that continuum. Also it's not a straight line: at some point your shop will just call up and say, 'you know what, we just need to take it all apart.' You've just experienced the big step function in the continuum line.
Condition, and this ensuing dynamic, creates most of the 'noise' you hear in the pricing 'signals' that get bandied about, as many folks on this thread have mentioned.
In today's collector Ferrari marketplace, you can buy 330GTCs aplenty for ~$750-850K. Yet several have sold >$1M. I would argue that the delta is driven mainly by the restoration cost plus time value. (after discarding outliers like a McQueen premium or somesuch)

If you take a driver 50k mile 993tt, I see the following costs:
$30k for a very high quality bare metal respray with new trim, seals, etc.
$30k for engine and transmission refresh
$10k for suspension
$10k for interior work
$10k for incidentals
That I feel is pretty generous and you're looking at $90k.
