Default Spark Plug Discussion

Gents, after some recent discussion, I'm starting to wonder what plugs are recommended for stock or mildly modified cars.

I currently run FR6 LDC plugs, but Steve Weiner suggested he would never run them in a turbo car, as opposed to a 5 heat range (cooler).

So what do you guys run and what have your experiences been?

car is stockish, turbo S ecu and sport cats/muffler delete

Quad,
I went with his suggestion and car runs awesome. I am stock and have sports cat and muffler delete. I spoke to my tech and he suggested the same plugs as well.

Sorry, just saw this... I went one step colder than what you suggested.

Do you know what the actual Bosch plug number is? Logic would suggest that it would be FR5 LDC (instead of the FR6), but I am having a hard time figuring out if that is an acutal Bosch plug. It's not always possible to just step the heat range up/down and untilize all the same alpha numeric components of the plug.

The FR5 DTC and FR5 LDC's are both Bosch plugs of the same heat range; only the ground electrode configuration is different.

Both are appropriate for these cars,.....

Thanks Steve! I appreciate the numbers!

.....just for the sake of asking: Any experience with the NGK BCPR7ET? I've always had great luck with NGKs over the years and that crosses to the FR5DTC.

I had a plug service done last year. Car ran great before. Can runs great since. I'll post the part numbers when I look up my receipt.

FYI, remember, the plug service on the Turbo is 30,000 miles.

steve, can you share what issues you've seen on the FR6? Do you find them to be too warm? I've pulled a couple plugs on my car to check condition and they looked great.

Any input is appreciated.

thanks.

BLT4SPD:

NGK's are excellent plugs and I've no reservations about using them. Personally speaking, I haven't tried that particular one on these applications, however I see no issues.

Quadcammer:

Spark plug operating conditions & temperatures depend, naturally, on how each car is used and what modifications it may have. For general street use (no track) in a stock, unmodified engine, the 6's would be OK, however I've seen overheated ones in cars used for track days due to periods of prolonged boost which caused some detonation.

For any chipped engine and/or track use, the 5's are a better choice.

I use Denso IK22's and they're gapped at .020-.022. If your running pressures higher than stock you need less gap to avoid losing your spark prematurely.

Stock plugs are gapped at .031 inch (0.8 mm)

P.S. I wouldn't wait for the factory recommended ( 30k ) plug interval. 15-20 at the most. Cheap insurance. Just a real pain to do.
