Default ECU options

There's a thread on the 993 forum about someone making an easy (cheap - under 1000$) to modify plug and play ecu for the NA 993 (not sure if they are planning on making a turbo version). I don't know much about this stuff but understand the 993 t motronic is hard to modify/map (only a few people we know that can do this). But I also understand many people use ie. motec and rig up a custom wiring harness to essentially plug and play (using the stock wiring harness/sensors). Many more tuners have 'cracked' the 996 t ecu and can modify them. So how come you can't rig up a custom harness to use a 996 t ecu on our cars?

Must be a easy question for those who know. Just not compatible? Need different sensors? Completely different electronics? sorry for the ignorance.

Totally different electronics and ECU design between Bosch M5.2 & M7.2 or M7.8. Not compatible at all.

We've done Motec M600 successfully (even integrating knock-sensing) on the 993TT engines, however OBD-II compliance isn't possible so that limits that option to dedicated track cars.

Okay thank you Steve!
Rumor is that our emissions - 'air care' - is supposed to end in 2014?, then I guess motec would be an option...

I'm guessing the turbo has the 7.2?

You are quite welcome.

Lucky man, you! Oregon has no such things on the horizon and in fact, exempts nothing made after 1974. Each and every '75 car and later must be tested bi-annually.

If Air Care goes away, then Motec M600 is an excellent option if you have someone well experienced with the mapping. The devil is always in the details,...

God what I would give to have ME7 in these cars. The data cylce rate is soooooooooooo much better and you can acutally log more than a few parameters. ME5 makes me want to cry.

Motec is in my future (someday)

Todd Knighton at Protomotive can re-program your 96' ECU. It'll be a little more than $1K...but don't do it unless you upgrade the Turbos as well. ;-)
