Default My alternator belt snapped

While I was driving the alternator belt of my '97 Turbo snapped.

Is the belt specially made for the 993 Turbo or can I find it from some ordinary car accessory store? We don't have any Porsche services near where I live.

Can the car be driven for a short distance without the alternator belt? Are there any other harm than draining the battery?

Thanks

Are you an original owner? If not, inspect the pulley before you order any parts, the previous owner may have updated the pulley and you need a new belt with the new pulley. Yes the turbo has a specific belt. I doubt a local parts store will have the correct belt in stock. If the car is a daily driver, I would just get overnight shipping from sunset or pelican parts. Most dealers will have the belt in stock, i see you mentioned there is no dealer in town but maybe calling the nearest dealer and see if they will mail it. My alternator belt snapped this summer and I drove it 30 miles home, then charged the battery and drove another 30 miles to a garage. I recall the ABS lights were illuminated when this happened but I didn't confirm whether or not ABS functioned or why that lamp came on along with the battery indicator. Other than that, it's just a battery drain, no problem driving it but it's risky if you lose the battery you'll lose module power and thus engine will stall while you're driving which could be dangerous if you aren't careful. Intercooler must come off to replace the belts. Do a search on here for alternator belts you'll get plenty of info. Here's a link for some info on tools needed and such, but don't follow the belt sizes on the website, they are wrong. Use the attached .pdf as a reference for parts ordering after you inspect your pulley.

Ok, thanks for the great answer!
I'm the second owner of the car.
I actually live in Finland so ordering from the US won't come in the question. I'll call the nearest dealer tomorrow and ask if they could mail me the belt.
The belt that snapped is 9.5 x 757 so don't know if that's the original.

When the belt snapped the abs light, two abd lights and the battery light came on. Guess I don't need those? :P

Is the special tool must have to remove the pulley or do you have some other ideas to keep the pulley from spinning?
Is the intercooler hard to take off?

1. Order only an original porsche belt. Something about aftermarket belts being a touch too wide or narrow, which can cause problems.

2. If you post a pic of your pulley, we should be able to tell you what the correct size is based upon the pulley update. A lot of times the wrong one is put on.

3. I use a screwdriver inserted through the holes in the fan into the alt. blades to keep the pullies from moving. This is not the porsche approved method, but its effective and caused me no damage.

4. No, but the allen bolts have a tendency to strip.

Basically:

remove the 6 8mm screws on the IC shroud and lift shroud off.
Loosen clamps on boost hoses...be careful they don't fall down into the engine compartment
loosen 3 allen head bolts on top of the IC. Should be a 6mm allen.
loosen the two 13mm hex bolts under the IC (bolted to the top of the fan housing). Make sure that you hold the captive nut on the back side of these bolts, as if they fall, you can pretty much forget finding them. Then remove the bolts
Finally, remove the electrical connector on the pass side of the IC throat for the temp sensor.
Then just lift the IC up and off.

After the first few times, takes about 10 minutes.

Thanks for the great tips!

Can you tell the correct belt size from these pics:

sure can.

You do not have the alternator pulley update (which I'd recommend).

Therefore, you will need part 999 192 343 50. (760mm length)

If, on the other hand, you would like to perform the update, you need the items in the below tsb:

So the belt I had was too short for it?
Probably the reason it snapped?

yes, the 757 is the belt used for the newer pulley setup.

Is it the reason it snapped? eh, maybe. 3mm isn't much, but it could be enough if the belt tension was very high.

If you are trying to do this yourself, remember the belt is b***h to get on. There's only a few mm clearance at the bottom, and you have to really force it. I used a method mentioned here of tying a string around the belt and yanking it in hard jolt to get it in; you'll know what i mean when u get there. Oh, also replace the shims in exact number on each pulley. Again be careful with hex bolts, they r really soft. GL!!

The updated pulley is gold/yellowish I think so it's pretty easy to tell whether it's been done or not.

Pulley update is a one-piece pulley half -- the old pulley is the pulley plus a separate tapered washer, so to speak.

I asked my dealer and they told me the correct belt for my car should be the 757 mm one. They checked it by using the VIN code of the car.
The car is a 97 model (registered 11/1996) so could it be that it came from the factory with the updated pulley?

no. You have the "spacer" for lack of a better word, which is a dead nuts give away that you have not had the pulley update done.

If you look at the tsb, you'll notice an arrow pointing at this spacer. The TSB states that item is not needed on the updated pulley as the "spacer" is cast into the pulley.

The dealer is wrong on this one.

eh, after some oxidation, they look similar to me. When I got my car, I got it with the update done. From the pics he posted though, I couldn't tell from the color. the spacer/washer is the giveaway
