Good advice.

Sorry to hear things didn't work out Chris, but given what you are willing to pay, you should be able to find a gorgeous private party sale without paint issues etc.

And ditto on the GS...I'm toying with the idea of a GS and another C2S instead of a Turbo

I don't like this approach. Even at a reputable shop, the seller still owns the car and may be tempted to cheap out.

In addition, a few weeks probably isn't realistic.

That said, negotiating the hell out of the ppi results could work out in your benefit.

If the rest of the car was clean, I would be inclined to drive the crap out of it, ala Italian Tune-Up and retest that one cylinder. Or, have the current owner do it then ship the car if the leak down results improve.

I just got in from a looong trip back here and can't sleep just yet so I thought I might respond to some of your kindly offered comments. To quadcammer: your probably right, that after the shell shock of this news to both the seller and myself wears off I could buy the car for a lower price. But I'm here in MD and the car is a miserable plane ride away, and I'm a really crappy negotiator, but mostly it's that I wanted a tt to do the coast highway with the vintage races and the Pebble Beach Concours to cap it off, sort of a bucket list item I guess. To Chris Walrod: I did suggest to the owner that he do just that. While the fact that the secondary air passages were clear made me think it was unlikely that carbon on the exhaust valve was causing such a leak down shortfall, it is possible that a little bit of knowledge on my part is dangerous (wouldn't be the first time). As it stands now I going up to New England to look at a 97 Arctic/BLk with. 22,000 miles, SUV original crap suspension, Autothority Stage 1 ECU and some sort of SS after mkt exhaust. $78,500
From a private seller. Now that I'm 3/4's the way through this tall gin and tonic I made myself as soon as I walked through the door, and owing to my emotional and physical exhaustion from all this, I'm going to bed.........but not before telling each of you once again how much I appreciate this community. Goodnight......Chris

This place is some sort of perverse self help group for 993tt addicts - we ensure that addicts get correctly addicted.

not sure i agree with sequence of ppi (leakdown first...cosmetic second)

mechanical imo are easier to fix...(some) cosmetic issues dealbreaker

would you rather know the engine is okay and then find out the car has been in an accident/has several cosmetic issues?

if cosmetics (which should be easy to check out) pass the sniff test...then imo look at the mechanicals

that's how a shop doing a ppi on a ferrari presented it to me.

made sense.

^^ RMG ( a *very good* indie in NorCal) would tend to agree. See Step #3, below. Then note Step #7, for Bobby's views on both compression and leak-down tests. No affiliation, just a very happy former customer. Your opinions on PPI's may vary.

After a good night's sleep I read the middle of the night post of mine. I learned the hard way not to post or bid on eBay while drinking. (A surprise 63 Caddy convertible arrived on a transport from AZ one afternoon due to my dear wife's enjoyment of Grey Goose and E Bay motors at the same time.) I did want to post one bit of information from the PPI that I neglected to mention. They performed a compression test hours before the leak down.
The readings were 140's and 145's which they thought were excellent. This doesn't change my mind but you guys have been so good with your support I thought I owed you all the info....blame it on the gin.....Chris

I wonder if it might be worth a phone call to RMG to discuss the conflicting compression vs leak down results. Just a thought. It sounds like a great car except for that one stinking cylinder.

Chris - If you are headed to New England next to look at another TT, please let me know if you need anything. I (and many others here) can direct you to good places for a PPI or look at the car with you.
