I believe there is a DIY on the windshield squeak and dash noise.

The guy at the shop doing the PPI assures me it can be cured.

Thanks Tony, I did a search and it appears there are ways to fix this. Foam rope and chain wax among them. As Chris Walrod says "Is this a great place or what".....Chris

Very exciting Chris. Good luck with the PPI. Are you planning to drive it home? Hope so.

No Patrick my plan is to do rt 1 to Carmel next week. Take in the various auctions where millions are spent on a car, watch the vintage races, finish with Pebble Beach concours, all of which will make me wish I had paid better attention in school, and ship the car back to MD. I last drove across the country in my VW bus in 1965 with my new wife, an once of dope and $325 total dollars....wish I could do it all again..Cheers......Chris

dash squeek can be helped substantially with the 996 foam rope.

If it really bothers you, a dealer should have it, and the only tool you really need is a small screwdriver.

Chris,

Will you be passing through Santa Cruz after the Pebble weekend? Its about 50 minutes north of Carmel on Hiway 1, on the way to San Francisco or San Jose.

Steve, one plan is to drive to SF and have car shipped from there. I would love to stop in Santa Cruz. I haven't been since the sixties...has it changed any? I would enjoy meeting you and sharing a glass of wine or coffee...whatever.....Chris

Santa Cruz is exactly the same... lots of old VW vans, and 2/3s of the world's Priuii.

It would be great to meet up with you. I have no idea what I'm doing that weekend... I really want to see some part of the Historics. My cell number is (805)217-6304. Lets see if we can pull this off. I have met some great folks from Rennlist... some of my best buds.

Chris, I would definitely have them re-paint gauge the car during the PPI and look for evidence of a previous collision. Best of luck!

So I'll know in a few hours if this is the car for me. Steve I tried to PM you but don't if I succeeded, or maybe sent two of the same message. Anyway, my cell is 443-624-1025 and I would to watch some of the vintage races or pit walk with you. In racing to the airport for the flight out from MD, I discovered I forgot a few things. Among them are a change of underwear, socks and the charger for my I Pad and phone. On the upside I was wearing pants and remembered the cashier's check. I am typing this with the last of my battery....I'm hoping the hotel can help me out. I'll post the news whatever it is. One final question, ha ha, what is the minimum acceptable leak down number expressed as a percentage? When my 993 was tested last Friday the lowest cyl. was 97%. Thanks all....Chris

Default Coast Road

Chris, I just did the 1 up from LA in a Camry Hybrid wishing I was in a 993. There's a bit of construction going on with a few spots of single lane, but nothing to worry about i.e. long stretches of potholed gravel.

From LA you could make Carmel in one very long day, assuming you're sticking to the 1. If you go the 101 it's quicker, but not as picturesque. If you wanted to break the drive into two days you may want to stop in San Luis Obispo for the first night. It's probably 1/2 way between LA and Carmel. We stopped in Santa Barbara our first night, which was a short drive from LA, then Monterey the second night, just North of Carmel.

All that said, I'm sure there are people on the list that live in the area and can give you suggestions on stopping points and distances. This was just my observation over the past three days of driving.

I hope the purchase goes well for you. That road in a 993 will be a lot of fun.
Scott.

Chris - I mentioned a couple days ago bringing a paint gauge when you inspect the car. I don't know that much about paint gauges, but see if you can find a digital one. The paint gauge used in the picture on the seller's website (http://ignomini.com/4sale/911.html) seems imprecise. If the difference between 7 and 10 mils is the difference between factory paint and a respray, a digital paint meter will be easier to use.

Keep in mind 993 turbos are now 14 and 15 year old cars, so cosmetic resprays are not uncommon. Good luck.
