Default Porsche parts price make me laugh

I've been working with my local dealer to pick up the last few things I need to get my car put back together. Here's some pricing that made me chuckle:

Almost any o-ring: $0.93. (Seriously? For an O-ring??)
The snap clips in the trunk for the carpet: $5.14 (EACH)
Screw for said snap clip: $0.33 (EACH)

So, ok, those are a pretty crazy. BUT, for those of you who have ever had to remove the heat shields from any of the exhaust plumbing, those clips and bolts rust and break (it's like death and taxes)....leading to (sit down first)

Clip: $3.78
Washer: $0.37
Bolt: $5.67

So, for each one of those bastards that breaks, it's $9.82, PLUS tax! AND there's 10 of them! Ain't capitalism grand

Anytime ANY Porsche part is under a hundred bucks, I just thank my lucky stars.

They call this market power. Why does Porsche price its parts in this way? Because it can . . .

We consider you folks south of the 49th lucky! We shop stateside because Canadian prices are double. For example: Slave cylinder - $1,163.47 Canadian..................$617 USA excluding $20 shipping.

I recently needed a new key cut. The parts dept manager said it would be £90 if it had to come from Germany, or £20 (just for the metal, not the key head) if they had one in the UK distribution warehouse. OK, so they had a few in the warehouse and I turned up with the car to get the new key cut. They messed up cutting it so I had a wasted journey. However, and credit to them (OPC Reading, UK), they arranged to send their guy out to the indie where I was having some work done, cut the key there and then, made sure it fitted and did not charge me. Free, gratis, no charge (apart from the fuel for the first trip).

OOOOOO

Scott. Do you consider Porsche Parts prices high? Sorry, but this is my reading of your post. Right!

Tell you, Porsche are quite cheap compared to other German autos. Be it vehicle or parts prices.

I understand from one Porsche factory manager, they make no more than 8-10% profit, tops. Thats about the same profit margin applied by leading supermarkets on groceries !!

OOOOOO

True. The dealers make a lot of the margin on the parts. 8% at the factory, another 30-40% at the dealer wholesale level, and another 30%-ish for aftermarket guys like us. Every time it changes hands, the price goes up! It's amazing that we can sell the parts for the same price as the dealers, considering all of the markups.

I'm not sure who's stealing my money on a 3 dollar bolt, it could be that the system is broken

I will say that my 24 Hrs of LeMons car has parts so cheap they make me chuckle like I'm getting away with something!
