Default Powersteering issues

Well this is entertaining (in a way that I'm sure will be expensive).

Its been about 30-35 degrees overnight here, and when the car sits for more than a few hours, the power steering makes a very loud groaning/whining from the rear of the car. It doesn't sound like its coming from the rack (but its a fairly inexpensive reman rack).

Hmm, pentosin low you say? Unfortunately not..full to the mark. (on another note, something in my powersteering fluid system is leaking, which looks like the banjo bolts).

Once the car has been running about 5 minutes or so the noise goes away, the steering feels fine, etc.

I'm guessing this is a bad bearing or similar in the ps pump...does this mesh with your opinions?

Sadly, this powersteering pump is about $1200...with no rebuilt option.

Can anyone rebuild this thing?

Also, can this ps pump be replaced with the motor in place?

I have a feeling I'm going to be cursing porsche engineers very shortly

Thanks all.

I had a similar issue and it turned out to be a clutch slave that needed to be replaced. correct me if i am wrong but all these hydraulic systems are connected. ask your local porsche parts guy how many power steering pumps he has sold as replacements, my guess is not many as i was advised the pump is not really prone to failure. Do your brakes and clutch feel weird also?

I believe the brakes are a separate system, but the clutch and PS are one and the same system.

Clutch feels ok, despite the accumulator not holding pressure for very long. There is no overflow from the front reservoir.

The noise corresponds with turning the steering wheel. Any turning when cold and it is a scary noise.

If your hoses are leaking, either from the banjo bolts or old degraded hoses, you can get air in the system which will cause the groaning noise. Debris can also clog the filter in the reservoir, starving the pump of fluid and making the noise. Very unlikely that the pump is bad.

Heres the rub. I'm getting ready to move to my new home, but I won't have access to a garage for 6 weeks. I don't NEED to use the car, but it would be a shame not to drive it for 6 weeks.

Given that the noise goes away after it warms up a touch, do you think its reasonably safe for the pump to let the car warm up until the noise disappears and then start driving?

I figure if the fluid was fully blocked, the pump would have seized a while ago.

This system is very robust, drive with a clear conscience.

Pretty sure the turbo's pump is unique because it also provides the assist for the clutch...

I actually don't believe so. There is only one pump part number listed in PET.

Thanks for the link though, I might pick it up anyway.

well, I found a reman pump for $400 if necessary. At least its cheaper than the best new dealer price of $1,275

Be absolutely sure it's a 3 port pump.
