do these strut bearings need replacement?
Looks like the bearings are starting to push through or is this normal?

I couldn't really tell by appearance, but I got rid of a front end clunk I could feel through the steering by replacing those bushings. Not too pricey and probably about time after all these years. Do the rears too.

Getting back on topic and following on from Alan's very good question - could someone have a look to see if the bearing looks any different with a turn of lock applied?

Yes the struts do move. In your pictures, the wheels will have been turned sharply to the right. i.e. when turned rightward, the left side plate tilts inwards, and the right tilts outwards. That is to say they move in unison.
