What about just shipping the heads off to Ruf for a rebuild?

I thought about that. But I didn't think they could do a better job than Ollie's:

Maybe I'm wrong about that? Ollie's is pretty well known for their quality. They specialize in this type of work and have been doing it for 20+ years.

I've sent an inquiry to Ruf in Germany to see if the exhaust valve damage is normal for this mileage and driving style.

Actually RUF doesn't do heads in house; it sends them to an outside specialist. But they do impose typical RUF thoroughness on the specialist. I had mine done during the conversion in '08 for an additional 5000 euros. I had leak down issues, which was part of the reason for the conversion in the first place. Plus there would be no guarantee on the motor unless the heads were done. When they came back to RUF they reinstalled them and leak tested them again. They didn't like the results on cylinder 6. Specialist was required to redo that one. Reinstalled, tested yet again and they still didn't like the result. They finally reworked that one in house until it passed muster. This was all covered under the original 5000 euro estimate. YRMV, but this was my experience with them.

Bill,
Ollies fix is bronze valve guides which the factory should have done anyway. It doesn't hurt to freshen up the valve springs as they're usually toast after the exhaust guide failure. Should be good as new.
Did you think about twin plugging it?

They look like a pretty decent outfit, good prices too.

Hi Jim. They will use the bronze valve guides. Have you seen your exhaust valves and seats "hammered"? I assume the bronze valve guides doesn't fix that.

I thought about twin plugging but didn't know if anyone had a plug-and-play setup by now. I didn't want to mess with the programming or a really custom install.

Email correspondence with Ruf in Germany...

BILL: My Ruf 993 Turbo R has about 40K miles after the conversion. All 6 of my exhaust valves need to be replaced. Ollie’s Machine Shop in the US says the exhaust valves and valve seats are “hammered”. The intake valves are OK.

Is that normal for a Ruf 993 Turbo R with that mileage?

RUF: That’s not a RUF problem. That’s a 993 Turbo problem.

We advise (not later than 62.500 miles), to change also the intake valves, the valve guides, the springs and the spring caps.

The hammered seats and valves is more of a spring issue.

As for twin plugging, porsche makes a pretty nice plug and play package for the 993 NA

Motor only had about 20k on it when I converted to a 3.8 no valve issues. No plug and play although Andial has a porpriety ecu from FVD. Too many parts to change and you'd loose the Ruf tune.
