Default Caliper refurb

Refurbed my caliper over the last few days

Did it in situ, used Auto K brake caliper paint and high temp laquer over the Porsche decals off the bay...................looks soooo much better than before..

Yes, amazed myself at the results, they were pink and peeling laquer type before, cost was $30 and a mornings work, the best mod I have done on the car so far by a long mile

You've done a great job there! Mine have certainly gone pinkish too with the decals deteriorating and pealing in the context of track miles. I might follow your lead when I next change the pads.
Thanks for sharing your DIY.

they look really great.
this is something I had planned to do this month. I figured it would take a few days to do. forgive me for asking a couple questions.
does in situ mean you did not remove the calipers or the brake lines? I assume you removed the calipers but not the lines. did you sand them or wire brush to prepare them? and did you spray the paint or brush?

OK, here is what I did;

Jack up car
Remove wheel
Clean caliper with wire wool and brake cleaner, I used 1/2 a tin on each caliper
Remove all loose laquer and rub down with 400 wet n dry all over
Degrease caliper with thinners
Mask up bleed nipples and brake pads & sensors
Mask up disc and wheel arch liner
Spray 7 or 8 very thin coats of Auto K red brake caliper paint, this is quite thick paint so needs to be applied slowly to avoid runs in paint, I had a heater on the caliper after each coat and it was dry enough to add a further coat in 15 minutes or so
Apply PORSCHE decals carefully
Apply 4 or 5 coats of High Temp Clear laquer to protect the decals and really make them big boys shine!
Leave for an hour or so with heater on, then remove all masking

Dont get me wrong, I havent sprayed around the back 100%. If you removed the calipers and had them on a bench they would probably look sad, but I have achieved what I set out to do in about 6 hours for about 30 of your american dollars.

I really should have taken some before pics too.....................but Im sure you guys have seen pink, flaky caliper before!

thank you I really appreciate the info. when yhou say degrease calipers with thinners is that paint thinner? and the 400 wet/dry is sand paper I assume, did you use water to sand?
again it looks great. six hours make more sense than I was thinking when you said one morning I was thinking half that and couldn't understand how you work so fast.
Parsonii: for the grand does he change the seals? which is necessary when powdercoating at high temps I think.

Degrease with anything that will remove grease, oil, ect, I just had some thinners handy so used that

Wet n dry, I used wetish with the brake cleaner, TBH you dont need to get them super smooth as the paint is quite thick and covers up the little marks and scratches easily enough.

I reckon it was 90minutes per corner

My caliper have had new plates and pistons and seals quite recently so I didnt want to go down the full strip/powder coat method

A word of warning though, the paint is so thick it does take along time to dry hard (at least 3 days)

At the risk of asking a totally stupid question, and do take care to not berate me excessively as I carry a UK passport and you'd be doing a disservice to a fellow countryman.....I have some very small spots, not interfearing with the decals, that require attention, and was going to umm, use a brush to touch 'em up. Do you think this would work or I should mask and spray as above? Thanks...

I wouldnt think it could look any worse than having chips in it. I would use a very soft small brush, a make up brush is ideal

You could change the colour of the calipers but it would be better to take them off the car IMHO as you couldnt get the paint everywhere around the back with them in situ

Thanks. I think I'll try the brush.
