Default Problems with Clutch?

Hi all,
On my recently purchased 1995 993 TT, the clutch pedal is extremely heavy before engine is started. But once engine is started, it feels very light.
I remember from my previous 1997 model, it wasn't like that.
Can you help me by telling me if that should be the case? If not, what could be wrong with it?
thanks very much!
Rgds,
jack

your clutch accumulator isn't functioning properly.

It should only get heavy after pumping the clutch pedal about 10 times with the engine off.

I recently imported a 993 tt with same issue - cannot depress at all until car started. This car had a leaking clutch slave cylinder which has been replaced, but the accumulator was also replaced; now awaiting arrival of a one way valve which prevents fluid leaking back out of reservoir. If it cannot maintain fluid in the reservoir once shut off, you lose hydraulic pressure until you start car again. Abnormal. Good luck.

Sounds like your clutch booster is going out. A really common 993 TT problem.
Its a hydraulic assisted clutch and should be easier to depress than the GT3 or GT2
clutch. That little accumulator goes bad, then you get the heavy clutch.

The accumulator is attached to the clutch slave cylinder, and is used to retain system pressure when the engine is not running. If clutch functions normally with running engine, but is heavy with engine stopped, the accumulator has failed.

Replace the clutch accumulator... that will fix it. Not expensive.

Where can you find the accumulator?

It's the small black bottle (aprx 3" in diameter) attached to the slave cylinder which is hanging down in front of LH drive shaft in picture.

thanks guys!

Where can I find part number? To replace it, do i need any other parts/ clamps/ hoses?

Is there also an accumulator for the ABS? my brake pedal sometimes vibrates when I brake (even gently). It feels like ABS is trying to store pressure.

Finding a wrench to get the accumulator off is a pain, some people grind their open-end wrenches thinner to get it to fit (can't remember the size). An oil filter wrench worked for me. https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ferrerid=28499

It seems that my mechanic used a BMW (gasp) accumulator on one of my turbos. I don't remember the part number or the cost.

Replace the clutch slave cylinder while you're in there. One pentosin bath is enough for anyone.

Steve, I am ashamed of you.
