Default GIANT KEY FOB!!

when i bought my 993 tt this summer i only got 1 set of keys. It came with the individual key and the little fob thing that u click on to lock/unlock the doors....so 2 separate pieces. I recently ordered from the local Porsche dealer another set in case i lose my keys. I picked them up today after they programmed it. I was shocked to see how big it was. the key and fob are one total piece and is 2 3/4 inch long and 1 1/4 inch wide and 3/4 inch thick. once the key is extended out it is probably 4 inches long! It actually gets in the way of the menu "lever" that extends out to the left of the steering wheel. Is this normal? THX

Parnelli,

It's an easy conversion. I did it shortly after buying my 993. It's much, much better than the switchblade that came with the car.

I need to do this as well. The standard key is just too big and not very handy.

Isn't this something that the dealership should've just done at the time? Why should I have to convert it?

The separate fob and key that you got with your car was actually factory original equipment for a different Porsche (944? 964?). Most 993 owners convert to the separate setup as it appears the PO of your TT had already done. Since you were ordering a completely new key you should have ordered the fob and key for a 944(?). By ordering a key for a 993, you got what you got, the big factory original equipment switchblade key/fob.

Depends how you ordered the key and fob.

Did you specifically order the separate key and fob?

Since it appears you, or the parts man, simply ordered the original key fob combo, that's what you got.

Maybe you can go back and ask the parts man if he can do anything for you.

Doesn't hurt to ask.

The very first thing my tech did when I took the car to him after buying it was to replace the switchblade key with the key and fob. Said he'd seen too many switchblades get stuck in leather seats.
