Default CEL and buying question

I am looking at a 51K mile 1997 993tt. The PPI was done and here is what I was told from the seller:

1) Steering rack sweats slightly from one of the boots, not bad enough to replace
2) Check engine comes on because of FVD exhaust
3) Car whined at highway speed, but it was corrected.

Car has FVD exhaust, turbos and software.

Seller wants $54,900.

Thoughts and suggestions.

He said he had an invoice on the whine, I can't believe FVD makes a product that would make the CEL come on all the time. He said he had it reset, but has to do it every so often, it sounds like valve guides to me, or at least thats what it was with my last 97 993tt.

I think I need to pass.

It is a great looking car if anyone else is interested. Speed Yellow, Black Sport seats, aluminum gauges, yellow calipers.

Jim - worth throwing a code reader on it to see what codes are causing the CEL. Could just be O2 sensors or something else benign/inexpensive

CEL due to SAI is pretty rare on 993 turbos

AFAIK, CEL with fvd software/exhaust is fairly common. The immobilizer light staying on is common as well. A friend's previous FVD 490 kit has it's cel light on but ran/checked out fine - I think it was a O2 sensor with being catless problem and there's some way around it but can't recall. I had a fvd 440 program and the immobilizer light was always on (functioned perfectly fine, eventually just pulled the bulb). Might call them and ask.

Clubrcr, if you performed a PPI, why don't you have the fault codes? They should have pull these and provided them to you in their write-up.

I disagree. This has not been my experience. I paid for, and performed 3 PPI's on Turbos last year. 2 of the 3 had fault codes and CEL that pointed towards issues with the SAI. All mileage was <50K. Could be a $1K repair or significantly $$,$$$.

I took the advice of sfbanchs and researched the threads. Along with a very poor leak down and another rennlister's PM, I am not walking away but running away.

The fault codes aren't the issue.

I really appreciate all you guys and your opinions. This is what makes the Rennlist a great place.
