I want to say my last one was around $180. Takes lots of quarts and 2 filters.

I think Brian is about spot on. If you have any smoke out the exhaust pipe after the change, they screwed up your oil filter... very easy to do, even for a dealership. Good luck.

For a dealership in the Chicago area, I'd say the price will be over $200. And the problem is that most of them are not all that familiar with the 993 Turbos. An indy shop, like Fischer or Perfect Power, would be a better place for an oil change.

Plus, a dealership will probably only have Mobil 1's 0W40, while the indys will have a better selection of oils and the proper viscosity.

I would not advise the stealerships. Don't you have a local Porsche-tech you can use?

I would check the monthly mags of your local porsche club. You can probably find them on the net.

Whoever does it, make certain they don't fill beyond the quarter fill mark on the dipstick (unless your car has the oil return lines and such). You'd be surprised at how many wrenches don't know about the potential smoking issues for these cars. Also, make sure they fill up to about 9 quarts then stop. From there, they'll want to slowly add a little at a time, rechecking the dipstick as needed.

The guy said they'd fill it just over 8 qts then slowly fill it from there.....seemed to know a lot on the filling of the air-cooleds. Is there a specific oil I shud ask for?

Parnelli,

Regarding what oil to use... most of us use Mobil One 15-50. Extreme cold or hot ambients may make a difference. There may be better oils out there (lots and lots of discussion on this topic), but this seems pretty safe.

$300 here in SoCal at our local dealer, doesnt matter which model P-car -- figure that out.

Anyhow, be sure, like mentioned above, NOT to overfill it -- I generally like to run the oil towards the bottom of the dipstick, hot, thermostat open.

Use dealer supplied filters. I very much prefer 15w50 oil.
