thanks for all the feedback guys.

scott: prefer stock/original. that turbo r has no ecu, is $32K, no paperwork, bad karma...sad story.

sinfulsteve: prefer stock and prefer staying local but thank you.

doug: yep, all stock.

goose: old habits die hard, 11 years and still love car.

mike/911Q45/TTSurg: have heard $15-20K for used...have also heard horror stories...black box, even if leakdown/compression ok. but may be good bailout.

acropora: let's hope the only thing soft is my head from driving all those miles...

rob: f'in dealers all have had a different story the past year (yes, started diligence in anticipation of this day). checked again...latest story is no engine exchange program, no long blocks. have one short block...in germany...price $27K...blow me...

mark: forgive my engine ignorance, but i was told the problem is p302...cylinder 2 misfire...related to leakage. thought that means new pistons/rings, etc. did not get "alot of good miles"...got alot of great miles...

kein-ersatz: capitalism...love it. but cheaper to buy the sticker...

misfire can be caused by many things... Did they do a leakdown test? That would pinpoint leakage.

If you are fouling plug(s) I'd bet on valve guides (top end) and certainly turbo seal leakage if they are original.

I would rebuild top end and turbos, take care of other incidentals that can harm performance and probably need replacing anyhow.

You could re-ring... then you might as well replace rod bearings... and...
the slope gets very slippery. Before you know it you have a rebuilt engine

It is a matter of price vs. value to you. My choice would be to get some more great miles out of it by doing the top end and turbos. That will buy you a lot of fun.

I'd bet that even with the 200K bottom end on yours, you could give it a new lease on life for relatively little $.

I'd call ViperBob for a chat. He is a proven problem solver.

Thats amazing mileage! I say repair it and keep it in the family.
Like others have said, it might not be all bad inside.

Mark D makes some really good points. Who said you needed a rebuild by the way? The misfire may not be related to the mileage of the engine at all, but as others have stated, there some tests you can run to verify...compression test or leak down test. Once you have these tests preformed, you'll have a clear idea of what's ahead.

tango,

my wrench who has been great did a leakage test and said cylinder 2 was going and the only way to fix was rebuild...i assume he checked other causes that would be easier to fix.

seems the only way to get accurate estimate is to break it open, take inventory, and then make some decisions.

'Maybe he's off in ferrarichat windowshopping.'

that is too funny...do follow that board now trying to learn more about the 550/575...prices just getting too tempting. figure may have to pick one up as a weekend car...keep the turbo as a daily driver.

turbo is getting taken apart...inventory of what is needed...then decision time.

should have answers this week...

When the engine's apart please post some hi-res photos. Curious to see a few things - condition of the ceramic liners in the exhaust ports, any signs of cross hatching left on the cylinder bores and exhaust valve guide wear, just to name a few.
