Well I took the red pill and there is no going back . . .
I few photos of my first PCA DE event @ MidOhio in my 993TT and AutoX the weekend before, more DEs to come at MidOhio and Putman.

The BMW OEM hitch is in short supply for some X5 (E53) models, long thread on that topic and on towing in X5 World forums. So make sure if buying a used X5 that for towing, that you have that well in hand, before putting your money down.
No issues for open car trailer towing, plenaty of pulling power. BMW OEM hitch for 4.x X5 is rated for 600lbs tongue and 6000lbs towing capacity (trailer brakes over 1600lbs required), though in the X5 forum, some have really pushed that envelope well beyond those factory limits. One guy is towing a 9000lb+ 31' Airstream camper (sway bars, proper loading over trailer axles, extended mirrors, etc. YMMV).
As some have gone into great detail in the X5 forum, the short distance from the rear axle to the hitch, makes for very smooth freeway towing w/o the tail wagging the dog, even with an a** end slot car load the way I have pictured.

'03 4.6is, BMW OEM hitch.
Specs and it has some built-in trailer towing smarts (w/ OEM hitch) and self adjusting rear air springs. Got mine used (very low mileage) from Huntingridge Motors and have been very happy with it. Get a set of snow tires / rims if you end up with all season tires or the 20" rims.
I found a good looking OEM set of rims and snow tires from Jon at Lakeshore.
