What is the purpose of the cover beneath the engine? It seems like it holds in a lot of heat. Have any of you removed it and left it off? Thanks in advance-- I've put 300 miles since Saturday when I got it. It's nearly has 5,000 miles now.

Go ask that question over on the 993 N/A forums and watch the ****storm ensue.
By the way, beautiful work on the Dinos! I've been following the newest restoration thread on f-chat.

Allegedly there's a line in the workshop manual that states something along the lines of "Do not test drive the car above 90mph without the cover in place," but many people have driven well in excess of that speed without issue. I have been to 155mph and the car was rock solid. I believe Toby (tb993?) reported that the front end becomes light before the rear, making me think the tray should not be a factor.
Arguments against the tray include the fact that it may inhibit cooling and that it hides fluid (particularly oil) leaks.

one other reason to keep it on - for those few who drive these cars in the winter, it helps keep the salt and crap off the turbos and other stuff down there. not real relevant to you in SD

Retains way too much heat, take it off. Porsche had it on for sound reasons only.
You cannot see oil leaks or anything with it on.
I used my for a winter snow sled.
