Default Brake Information

Found this and thought it was worth sharing, because I couldn't find it here on Rennlist. I was trying to find the correct color code for the Big Reds to repaint mine with. Here's what I found:

"The paint code we found to be close to original is a 1975 914 color L31M Ibiza red.It is not as bold a color as Guards red.Brembo never used high temp paint, the calipers were assembled bridgepipes seals and all then sprayed with catalized urethane. The color will turn brick red and eventually flake off with aggressive track driving."

Per John Paterek, who probably would know

I just bought a Holts red caliper paint kit, and I believe this is what everyone uses.
Looks perfect when it's done as well. Just buy a decent brush and throw the one away that comes with the kit.
You can buy the decals from Ebay which are perfect.
Hope this helps

Cool. Did you consider doing it in any other color Graham? No offense inteded, colors are a very personal thing but I never thought the red calipers went well with Arena red.. Would be cool to do them in yellow or riviera blue

Yeah, I'm planning to beadblast the calipers then either powdercoat them (I have a kit I've been dying to use) or spray them with catalyzed urethane. I was trying to find the right color, which wasn't all that easy...I still don't really have the right answer.

I'm half tempted to just spray them guards red when I fix some other touch ups on the front end. I don't think anyone will notice.

he sanded them and painted them right on the car (instead of powdercoat). are you going to use your stove in the kitchen to powder coat?

No, the shop where I keep my 68 Mustang project has an oven for just such things...it pays to have friends with their own private collections and restoration work. A buddy of mine owns a 20,000 sq foot building that he converted to his "man hut", complete with paint booth, lift, machine area, rotisseries, you name it. I pay him some rent (he says I have to pay *something* to be his friend), and have run of the place.

So, I'll pull the calipers, blast 'em, then paint/powder coat them. As for the rotors, I need to measure them first to see if they're worth messing with first.

I wish I had a friend like that. I need a friend like that badly.

Just don't powder coat your calipers if you ever plan to track the car. It can't hold up to the heat and will be ruined very quickly.

Yeah, I read that too...but I don't plan to track the car. However, it does seem like the best approach is to just spray them with a nice PPG urethane and be done. No muss, no fuss and I can dork around with the powder coating on something else!
