Default Air con is repaired.

It took myself and a good Porsche guy about 10 hours in total.
To replace the evaporator is a major. You have to remove the fuel tank, 3 amps and all stereo gear, fuse box, firewall and 100 other things. Then when you battle for about 2 hours with the blower unit to get it out the rest is relativley easy. BUT had there been a Porsche garage close I would have just paid the money over. NEVER AGAIN!
This is a hard job for someone with a little know how IMO.
I have worked out that when Porsche designed the 993 they laid the floorpan on the ground, placed an evaporator unit on it and built the car around it.
Still, I have it tested and charged this morning and it seems to be sweet again. But OMFG, thats a job you have to think twice about before attacking it.
Good thing is there were no screws left over!

congrats that was fast.
you must have a great feeling of accomplishment. I know I did when pulling my external oil cooler to change the resistor (I have turbos cooler as well and brake ducts, which make the job more difficult)
although sounds lke it was nothing compared to your job.
again congrats...now have a cold one to celebrate
and what no pics???

Thanks Gert. It was a mission but it's all done now.

Its the same with the previous generation 964/5 - unfortunate design!
But think of all the money you saved on the labour :-)
Hope you never have to rebuild the heating, they buried the heater matrix as well! (Ask me how I know..)

If Don (911/Q45), who is a pretty competent wrench, will have nightmares over this, I'll just ship my car to New Zealand and have 993man do mine, if it ever needs it. Freightening pictures. You are a brave man. Congrats. And the car looks georgous!

It was a big job.
Luckily my mate is not afraid to tackle anything with a Porsche. he is one of those guys that just knows where everything goe's back. No left over screws! Amazing.
The worse part was trying to get the firewall back in to place. We spent maybe 2 hours trying. It was really frustrating. A couple of beers later we tried again. It's summer here so working in a garage gets hot as hell. It turned out to be a small unused cut off loom that sits under the fuse box. When we found it we tucked it out of the way and it slipped right into place. The thing I learnt with these cars is they are so well built there is no give at all. You have to be perfectly lined up everytime. Never again though.
It was 10 hours but there was 2 of us.
It is satisfying but seriously, I would rather pay someone.

You picked a tough one to take on, that is for certain. Good work!
I would rather drop the engine.

Only half serious.... though dropping the engine/trans may actually require less fasteners, plugs and hoses to be removed/disconnected
