Default Red Line Question

Hi,

I'm new to the forum. Exchanged my Ferrari 355 last week for an arena red 993 turbo and couldn't be happier.

The car is fantastic and the question i have is one of a positive note, it feels far quicker than i expected. Okay i have come from a 355, that had a sports exhaust and was dyno'd at putting out 370 bhp, before that i had a 550bhp Cayenne turbo, a 450bhp ferrari 456 and a tuned 996 GT3, so i have a good idea about what feels punchy or not but my 993 turbo feels alot quicker than all of the above.

It is meant to be standard and i can find nothing in the invoices etc about an ecu remap etc but i have noticed that it goes about 1000rpm over the redline with no problem at all and pulls away from my friends new m5 quite easily which i would not have expected with a standard 408bhp car.

Can someone tell me whether it is normal for them to quite happily rev 1000rpm more than the redline and whether there is an easy way to find out if the car has had an ecu remap etc.

In all honesty it feels like a 480bhp car, maybe it has bigger turbos on it too, but the intercooler is definitely standard as is the exhaust.

I guess i could just go and get it dyno'd

Any answers are much appreciated,

Thanks,

If it does not bump the rev limiter at 6700 or so, I'd say it's been tweaked.

My thoughts exactly. It seems very happy to rev to nearly 8000rpm and the car feels fantastic doing it. I'm not sure what it has had done, i know an ecu remap generally takes them to 430bhp, this still feels quite a bit punchier than that. But i guess it's strange in that case that it has a standard exhaust and intercooler. Maybe it has upgraded turbos and an ecu remap. I'm sure i will find all this out as time goes by

I would HIGHLY recommend you NOT rev it to 8000 until you find out what's what.
I have upgraded Carillo rods in my car and I would not even consider spinning her to 8k.

I predict an intimate relationship with a Porsche tech in the very near future!

Hey, I'm no fool and will not be looking for a quick route to forking out a hell of alot of money. I'm taking it to be looked at tomorrow to see what's what. The car feels very good and is in excellent condition. I suspect it has been tuned and just wanted a few more opinions. I might have been exaggerating saying 8000rpm, this is not my 355 :-) but it seems very happy to go to around 7500rpm with no bouncing.

MatthewY, did you buy the 993TT in Europe or did you bring it in from the USA. Congrats on the new car.

Don't forget, the car has 400 ft-lbs torque (stock). And this you will feel.

did you have a ppi done? I understand the ecu usually has different markings if ugraded. or you could check with previous owner.
good luck and welcome.
I think that none of us would rev our tts 1000 above redline (for fear of internal damage). these engines can be expensive to rebuild. so be careful

And just so you know, all new owners have to post pictures of the new car for the board to properly welcome you.

it's easy to see if your ecu is stock or not, just look under the seat to see if the bracket with the security bolts are still on limiting access to the ecu - if there is no bracket and you can look at/remove the ecu easily then the ecu has been changed. The security bolts/bracket is a pain to remove. Also the ecu if stock should have the same vin number...
