Default 97 turbo factory engine exchange

Anyone have any experience/knowledge regarding factory engine exchanges for a 993 turbo?

I heard about this as a possibility from my mechanic as an alternative to a rebuild.

Mine has 227K miles...still runs great but want to know my options when 'that day comes.'

I still prefer 993 over 996/997 turbo...and a Ferrari doesn't seem like it would handle everyday driving.

This mileage equates to 365K Kilometers, there is a story here for a magazine or two. I suggest that you may want to contact a few on both sides of the pond.

poor guy asks a question and only recieved praise. I will check with my local parts guy at the dealer and see if such a program exists. I'll report back my findings

The price for the boxer engine what porsche call the short block for a 993 turbo is 13000 euros today with a possible 15 % discount, on exchange with your old engine
Part number 99310096460 for a M64.60.
If to be done, you can specify you want the 3.65 litre engine and not the 3.6, the part numbers are the same.
I think Porsche NA is aligning their prices without the EuroS exchange, so you might shop around

is the 3.65 just an overbore? I would think a non-overbore would be preferred unless you want to do a 3.8l kit

Thanks Geolab...

My mechanic was quoted around 25K$ for a short block...

What's the difference between short block and long block?

It usually means.....

Shortblock.....no heads, no misc parts
Longblock......heads + misc parts

I don't know if Porsche includes P+C's in the shortblock.

All porsche engines I saw @ the dealer denominated short block come on a wooden crate involving the engine core pistons and heads, until the valve covers. It is the lower flat mechanical part. The other denomination they use is complete engine.

Eclou I asked the same question years back and was told that the since the block was inherited from previous 911's, there were several batches of 3.65 and 3.7's out of the production line, the engines were to be standardized to 3.7 if the 993 model was to continue being produced. BTW the 3.7 engine is called the x51 or 3.8 commercially. Check in the PET, that was my source of curiousity back then.
