Default 997tt tuning, some stuff from RS

New thread on this so as not to clog up Jean's acceleration thread.

The Cargraphic tuned 997tt 1482kg, 624hp RS Tuning engine lost the Tuner GP by a tenth of a second to a 700hp Techart 997GT2.

The Cargraphic car had some interesting acceleration numbers when tested by Sport Auto:
0-100kph in 3.3s
0-200kph in 9.9s
0-250kph in 16s
0-300kph in 28.2s

A massively fast car to 250kph then 12.2s 250-300kph seemed relatively pedestrian. I sent an email to one of the Cargraphic owners enquiring why it was so (relatively) slow 250-300kph. Cargraphic reffered me back to RS for an answer.....

This Cargraphic car was set up for the Tuner Grand Prix so all the aerodynamic aids were tuned for maximum downforce - this is well proven by the time set at Hokenhiem, this car was very effective. This is the lesson we discuss frequently about downforce and drag and this car had loads of both - this is the reason it was slow in the 250-300kph, its big wing and front splitters were all set for maximum downforce which had a big penalty in the drag stakes. This Cargraphic engine was a 100% bolt on kit without the engine being opened for rods so the torque was limited to as quoted ~800NM

RS are building a customer car 3.9l 997tt with a target top speed of 400kph (~250mph) which will have around 650hp and it is having completely stock 997tt spoilers, this was deemed imperative in order to hit this target speed.

One problem which I wasn't aware of is that the 997tt gearbox is geared in 6th for 330kph (205mph) and apparently there is no OEM type supply of longer gears so to go faster requires the retrofit of 996tt gearbox !

The high torque engines which RS have been building have been breaking these gearboxes. One customer has a 3.8l 650hp engine with
960NM and this customer drives on the autobahn 500km at a time. Because of this massive torque is delivered so low down ~3000rpm the guy will keep his car in 6th gear and use the torque. The 6th gear lasted a few thousand km ! They are testing with some new cogs from GT Gears in the US.....

250mph is mighty fast for a road car, as we all can appreciate. I would venture to guess it would take a lot more power to reach this number. Veyron does it with a grand. Very cool project!!
