Within the 1996 through 1998 production run, there were two distinct differences - the 1996 and the later ones.
The 1997s and 1998s had the following differences from the 1996s:
1 - Stronger transmission input shafts (a known weakness due to the combination of immense power and AWD).
2 - An ECU that was able to be flashed and modified (the 1996 was not modifiable).
3 - With the addition of a Porsche child seat, the passenger airbag was cutoff, thereby fostering a new generation of enthusiasts.
4 - Motion sensors for the alarm that were integrated into the map light above the rear view mirror.
5 - Standard wheel center caps that said "turbo" (the 1996 version had Porsche crests).

This car has a 96 build date and is a 97 model, does the above apply to it as a 96 or a 97? Any help i am going to look for the 'Turbo' written on the standard wheel center caps but I dont know what else to look for.

Dan, a few points:
Any year model starts in August the year prior. ie: August 95 built date is a 96 year model car.
This can be confirmed by VIN number. Look at the 10th letter on the VIN
S = 1995 year model
T = 1996
V = 1997
W = 1998

I have owned two 96's and a 98. They all had/have turbo centre caps.
Given the cars are 10+ years old, and the caps take 30sec to change, I suggest they aren't the most reliable reference point.... Stick to the VIN

996 / 986 generation cars received centre light and movement sensor, not Aus delivered 993

Most input shafts that gave problems were upgraded under new car warranty.
Unlikely you would find an early car now that still had one.

early ECU's can be done now.

Aus delivered cars did not receive the clutch pedal micro switch until the 997's [not a typo !]

cheers Paul

Ah, that makes sense.

Are you guys sure the '97 993s had clutch microswitches? I love the fact that I can roll down the window (driveblock is a cruel mistress) and start my car without having to get in - it's particularly useful to let the car warm up a bit before driving.

The microswitch can be bypassed as I will be doing this very thing on my 1997 model. All of the 1997 models I have seen have the clutch microswitch.

Come to think of it, I imagine the '96 would have to have a microswitch as well to turn off the cruise control, but I suppose it isn't wired into the starting circuit?

Sorry guys, I obviously don't know one shaft from another

It will be the drive shaft which I was talking about being the one which was chopped.....

So the input shaft is something else entirely ? well mine has never given any problems and I'm not shy in leaving blacklines given an opportunity so maybe it was a batch thing ?

That's what I imagine - I doubt there are any visible differences, probably more of an allow or porous casting type thing.

mine's a 97 with 96 build date and when I sheared off the ecu security shield/cover, found it had a 96 type ecu (ie. more difficult to reprogram ecu) - would be difficult to tell/see the ecu unless the shield has been removed for a previous upgrade...

Thanks for all the info in this posts response, a lot of the info i have been able to glean has obviously lacked authority.

I am still in the hunt and dying to find the right one... it helps making good use of this. Cheers!
