1st gear downshift whine... so what?
OK, I have read all I can find here on this topic (downshift into 1st whine, twisted shaft)
- I've seen some say they have this issue and no consequences for +25K miles.
- I've seen some say it needs to be dealt with or tranny will go belly up.
Which is it?
How much life is left if there is a whine? Probably depends on many factors I suppose.
Is there a bearing that will see damage from the twisted shaft?
Will the tranny grenade some day?
I am talking about a 97 car with the updated shaft.
Thanks!

Mark,
I'm not sure of the symptoms of a twisted shaft, but if you ONLY hear the whine while downshifting, that sounds more like the synchro screaming... a good reason to practice double-clutching those downshifts. I would suspect that the twisted shaft would show itself when decellerating in first gear... a downshift is not rquired.

Hey Steve, I am the same guy as 92964cab from the other place
Yeah, I see your point on the synchro noise. From what I have read here, that is how the twisted shaft issue can show itself? or decelerating in first gear. I may have misunderstood.
When I drove the car I don't recall if decelerating in first did it also. I will have to check that out tonight. Rob @ SCarGo thought it was the shaft issue.
Just trying to determine if that is a "deal with it soon or else" kinda thing or a "nah, don't worry about it kinda thing"

I think the 97 IS the updated shaft.
Though I'd bet there is a bulletproof part mfg for racing out there somewhere. For a price. Probably a completely different gearbox/parts available. I haven't looked.

If I may chime in, the '97 shaft is just as vulnerable as the previous ones, whatever improvement they have made, was certainly not enough, I have bent both, I never launch the car hard from standstill. I would not go out of my way to replace it. Some aftermarket ones are great, and very expensive as well.

Jean,
Thanks for the input.
I now have a tt with this issue and it is a 97. No idea how it was treated but so far I have heard the same, don't worry about it.
