Bigger wheels and tires???

I've done quite a bit of research already (a good portion here on the TT forum) and would appreciate any final comments before I pull the trigger on new wheels and tires.
I just replaced my C2 with a C4S so I'm new to the AWD issues. I'm buying new wheels and tires to serve double duty, mostly street with some AX and DE. I want only one set of wheels and tires to reduce variables and get to know the car well. I'm looking to go with wide 18s and would appreciate comments on the following:
Tires:
The top choice right now is Falken Azenis 615s in 315/30/18 and 245/40/18. Second choices would be Toyo RA1 and Yoko Advan AD07s. Diameter on the Falkens would be 25.6 on both tires whereas OE sizes are 25R and 25.1F. Will the larger diameters put stress on the VC? Will these sizes cause the car to tram too much on the street?
Wheels:
Top choice is CCW C10s or C14s. Second choice Volk TE47s. Since CCWs are custom made, I can play with sizes and offsets. I think 18 x 9/11s would provide the most flexibility should I decide later down the road to change my tire size though 9.5/11.5 would be interesting. Any thoughts on these sizes? Also, what would be the most aggressive offset on these wheels to maximize track? I was thinking ET40 all around. Comments?

For 993 turbo body 9X18 ET 43 and 11X18 ET 34 are the max offsets according to Cargraphic, with 235/40 and 295/30 tyres.
12" rears will certainly fit as probably will 9.5" fronts. The man to speak to is viperbob, he has run some pretty big stuff successfully.
As far as the VC is concerned, I researched the tyre diameter issue quite a bit before I reconnected my 4WD and according to Adrian Streather (993 bible author) the small differences do not matter to the VC's operation and one should not be concerned.
I run GT2 '04 wheel/tyre set up ie 8.5X18 235/40 and 12X18 315/30 and the 4wd seems to work fine so far......

i have 9 fronts 11.5 rears BBS Motorsports wheels with 245 40 and 315 35 Hoosiers. they fit and the car is LOW
wheel specs are:
8108 centers 1 inch outer front lip 8 inch inner
8108 centers 2.5 inch outer lip and 9 inch inner
wheel specs are:
8108 centers 1 inch outer front lip 8 inch inner
8108 centers 2.5 inch outer lip and 9 inch inner

Great input so far, thanks guys. In regards to the tire diameter, I agree that 25.6 is close enough not to make a difference. What I'm mostly concerned about is the variance between the revs between the front and the back. Fronts have an RPM of 803 while the rears are 813 RPM. Is this variance significant enough to affect the VC?

If tracking your car is going to be competitive, (meaning you want to win) you will be doing yourself a disservice by going with the biggest reasonable tire and wheel combination. (9 and 11's and 235 and 315). I predict you will be slower, no I guarantee you will be slower with a N/A 286 hp motor and huge tires and this combination. Stick with the stock sizes and you have more than enough grip.

I want to get to know the car without introducing a bunch of variables like dedicated R-compounds etc to make me faster. Therefore, I want one set of wheels/tires to serve double duty that I can eventually retire as a dedicated track set (the wheels that is) when I get more advanced. The tires I've chosen are great for AX, good for track and good enough for street. The sizes I've chosen along with the wide track of the S and the AWD should give me lost of traction on tight turns, which is what will help me in AX. Now I just need to know that they won't ruin my viscous coupling.

What do you know about CCW rims? Would you put them in the same league as say SSR's but maybe lower than Iforged, kinesis and HRE's? I spoke to a guy at CCW today and I liked what he had to say about custom offsets and one piece forged wheels for $2600 a set. My car is low (25" ground to wheel arch) so I'm thinking 235/40/18 fronts on 8.5" wheels with et52 offset and 295/30/18 rears on 11" et 44 offset

I don't know enough about all the brand wheels to be able to comment or compare intelligently. What I do know is that I'm looking for a lightweight wheel that looks good and has a good reputation for being strong and durable without having to spend $5k. I narroed it down to two: Volk TE37s and CCW. Volks are very nice and you can get them in 8.5/10.5 or 9/11s. CCWs are custom made so you can have whatever offset/size you want. Volks weigh 18/20lbs and CCWs are 19/20. Both sets are $2600ish. I'm going with CCWs because they are CNC machined out of an aluminum block and you can see it in the finish. They have a very industrial look to them do the visible grooves. I like the fact that it's a boutique manufacturer and that they're sold in small quantities, primarily to guys who track. Allan J, another RLer, has them on his track set for his GT3. They're very understated but they cought my eye the first time I saw them and they are cool.
As for the setup, I'm sure you could go wider if you wanted to, even at that height. My car is going to drop to RS height and I'm going with 9/11s and 245/315s. The previous PO had 265/315s on the car and there are at least three other RLers with the same setup, all with lowered cars. 235/295 would be a good street combo though.

I just ordered my new wheels!
Decided to go with CCW C14s in 18x9 ET48 and 18x11 ET38. I'm also going to try Falken Azenis 615s in 245/40/18 and 315/30/18.
Jimmy's comments above are well founded and the 18x9/11 give me the flexibility to go down to 235/295s and to be at the upper end of the recommended wheel sizes for these tire sizes, thereby also making the tires more predictable and responsive.
